its not exactly boring slate grey, but i feel it takes some of the wow factor from your stunning landscapes.
i know that some think black or white backgrounds can be boring as well, but have you tried black?
I think the lack of information to visitors is partly to blame.

can you connect it to an external monitor?
If so, if the problem happens on the monitor as well it would possibly be an issue with the graphics card. If the monitor is fine, then it would point to the screen possibly.
if you end up using PS, i have found the kelby videos really easy to follow - far better than reading a book about it.
