SF fans - help me out.

If you've not read Dan Simmons Hyperion Omnibus I can recommend that, has both Hyperion and the fall of Hyperion. Endymion finishes the story off but it's not as strong as Hyperion though still worth a read. Also if you don't mind a bit of Fantasy then The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant are...

    Lens recommendations for a 5dMkIII

As a complete curve ball; How about the Nikon 14 - 24 coupled with an adapter? There are a fair few canon shooters using the combo, and it will take lee filters via the SW150 though it should be noted this doesn't include polariser or big stopper. More seriously why not hire a few lenses that...

    New Nikon 400mm f2.8 VR

I think there are a fair few instances where a Gimbal (wonderful though they are) just do not give enough freedom of movement, in such circumstances IS or VR is invaluable. In addition to this there are venues i.e airshows where it's perhaps impractical to take a tripod add to this the freedom...

    Nikon 300mm f4

I had the same issue on a 300f4 a few years ago, sent it to Nikon and they said the afs motor needed changing as the one in currently was on its last legs. It was a costly repair but I was selling the lens and wanted it to be working perfectly when sold.

Sprawks and Owls - tips to find

I have several Tawny's in a local park and they become quite vocal around dusk and with luck can be seen before the sun sets, so a little walk around a local wood (the new forest if it's not that far away) say between 2pm and 5pm (take a torch for when it gets dark) and you should hear them...

    Most beautiful aircraft?

Prop wise has to be a mosquito for me. Jet wise I'll never forget as a kid being mesmerised by these at woodford (normally they displayed in a pair but this was the best woodford video I could find) VP9WvvI5sdA Brilliant airshow woodford attracted all sorts of rarities.

    Mifsuds Feedback

Just a quick shout out to some great customer service from Mifsuds, bought a used D800 from them (at a good price too). There was a little hickup which they sorted asap, great company to deal with and all staff friendly and extremely helpful.

    Shutter release cables for D3

If you bide your time the MC-30 does come up at a reasonable price, I managed to get one for £25 new off ebay in an auction that no one else bid on, 2nd hand ones are normally a good bit cheaper than what people want these days for new.

    They are back!!

Alas not seen any as of yet though it is good to hear they are back. It's been a very odd spring, I was watching about 30 waxwing last week and still get about 4 Siskin in the garden on a daily basis.

    carbon fibre tripod

I use a Gitzo 3540XLS for the same set up though Nikon not Canon, costly but very very good. You could pick up a second hand pair quite a bit cheaper though.

    Entry vs pro

Got to say I think I agree with Joe, in good light shooting the same scene with the same lens there won't be too much difference bar obviously the field of view. It's in situations where the light is not so good that the IQ of the 5D will clearly be better. Your paying for other perks...

    Which prime/s for landscapes

Looking at your camera bag you have an excellent combination of lenses already, the 14 - 24 is a cracking landscape lens the only issue is the degree to which the front element sticks out and the need therefore for a specialized filter holder. That said if you have a filter set already then...

    D800

I've thought about the very same thing as a D800 is likely to be my next piece of kit. Apart from the FPS I see no advantage to the crop mode, as Ade said its exactly the same image as if you just cropped from the original. I would imagine this has to be better for traking from a technique...

Red Grouse Locations in the Peak District

Bleaklow on the snake is good and quite often you'll find them within 100mtrs of the car, Golden plover can be found on the moor too in the spring and early summer. Alternatively Higger Tor is Fantastic for landscapes as well and is more likely to give you that purple heather you're after. All...
