Hi, just wondering if any users of this lens have had a 'squeal' sound come from this lens. I have been having a lot of trouble with this lens coupled with a tc 1:4 on a new d7100. At first I thought it might be the camera but have had two replacements and it works well with my other lens. I sent the tc off for checking and no problems were found. The lens had a rasping sound since I bought it a year ago but has started squealing intermittently.
Is it possibly the focus motor dying or is it a normal sound. I don't take many shots so could lack of use be the problem.
Regards Gerard.

I have been using a 300mm f4 with a 1.4 TC for nearly two years, both on a d7000 and since april on a d7100. I have luckily had no problems with the 300mm f4 or the 1.4 TC. I bought the lens new after buying and returning a 2nd hand one that had the squeal you are talking about when the AF moved over a long distance. The lens I have is pretty much silent, other than the low sound of the AF motor moving (no squeak).

Did you buy new or used? A friend of mine had problems with a 300 f4 he borrowed from a friend and a 1.4 TC he hired. The problem he encountered was the AF system stopped working intermittently, no squeak though.

I'm currently trying to upgrade to a 300 f2.8 and I have just returned a lens due to a squeaking AF motor. Have you phoned nikon or some where like fixation to ask them what they think? Do you know anyone with a nikon to let them try it on their camera?

Hi Rob, I bought the lens secondhand from the classifieds here. When coupled with the tc the auto focus also stopped working intermittently. When I reported this to Nikon they said they haven't heard of any issues regarding this combination. I'm also sending the lens in to be checked.

It's a bit of a nuisance as I am heading to London for Christmas and wanted to bring my camera gear but i doubt I'll have the lens back in time.

I'll report back when Nikon have checked the lens out.

Regards Gerard.

Mine sometimes squeals a bit, I'll worry about it if and when it stops working altogether.

I use mine with a Kenko 1.4 TC and sometimes it will stop focusing and flash an error. It seems that this is a lens to body contact problem, as a quick twist on the lens fixes it

The intermittent AF stopping was exactly the problem my friend had with the same combination. He had to turn the camera on and on to solve the problem when it occurred. It may be useful to send both the lens and TC to them, maybe even the d7100 so they test it properly.

Hi, just wondering if any users of this lens have had a 'squeal' sound come from this lens.
Regards Gerard.

Had this issue when I got the lens New, I reckon because it was sat about in a warehouse for sometime, after a week of doing the noise is died altogether and WEX replaced it within 5 days. I would guess it's the sign of the motor on its last legs from my experience...

I had the same issue on a 300f4 a few years ago, sent it to Nikon and they said the afs motor needed changing as the one in currently was on its last legs. It was a costly repair but I was selling the lens and wanted it to be working perfectly when sold.

This definitely isn't normal. I've never had any squeal from mine.

I use the same combination 300 F4/Nikon 1.4TC ans have never experienced any squeaks either. I would definitely get it checked out properly before it gets worse.

Sent the 300f4 off for checking and the silent wave motor needs replacing at a total cost of €423 euro.

Turning out to be an expensive month.

Hi Gerard,
Just as quick question if I may. Did you get sorted with Panamoz and would you deal with them again ?
Its just I'm thinking of getting the Olympus EM1 12-40 mm kit from them.
Thanks
Gary

Sorry for the late reply Gary. Yes I did get sorted out with panamoz and they were excellent to deal with. I would use them again.

On another note I received the 300mm lens from Nikon repair. I tried with the 1.4 tc and not only does the focussing have the same noisy motor but I have the same intermittent non focussing as well. I brought the lens to a local camera shop and tried one of their 300 lens. There was no sound when focussing from the shop model.

This issue has been going on months now and I have recently bought a Nikon 24-70 f2.8 and sb700 but I'm seriously thinking about selling up and moving to canon such is my frustration. I will give Nikon a call tomorrow as it was too late to call this evening.

Woah! That's extortionate. People manage to buy good copies used for a couple of hundred more. Though, I paid almost triple that for one new.
