SF fans - help me out.

Have you looked at the SF Masterworks series of books for inspiration? Loads of books from both old and new authors. Plenty already mentioned in the series: Frank Herbert, Ben Bova, Philip K Dick etc. Also Frederick Pohl and Alfred Bester and plenty of others.
However I would give Timescape by Gregory Benford a miss. The only book Ive had to give up on in recent times as it was just so damn boring (although I am getting close with the Woodcutter by Reginald Hill <stifles yawn> But thats not Sci-Fi).

i,m also with azimov foundation series being the most absorbing read ever ,but if you want real time sci-fi mixed in with current world affairs and a book i always have to turn to and read again before flying anywhere get hold of a copy of david grahams "down to a sunless sea " its un-put-downable

SF Masterworks is a good series, but far too much PKD for me. The Fantasy Masterworks series is also very good - Pavane and The Drawing of the Dark stand out from memory.

If you've not read Dan Simmons Hyperion Omnibus I can recommend that, has both Hyperion and the fall of Hyperion.

Endymion finishes the story off but it's not as strong as Hyperion though still worth a read.

Also if you don't mind a bit of Fantasy then The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant are some of the best books I've ever read, with some excellent character development and a very engaging story. Both the first and second chronicles are without a doubt masterpieces the last chronicles......the juries still out on that one.
