The Canon 50mm f/1.8 is an EF lens so will work on the 5D3. You're right, EF-S will not work on a full frame body. If you like the 17-55 range on your 500D then the full frame equivalent is 24-70. If you need something with more range look at the 24-105, but this is f/4.0, not f/2.8.

The Canon 15-85 is a great lens. Depending on your budget also take a look at the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4. It has less range, but is faster.

Depends on your budget. The 400D is a good place to start. Although if you can stretch to it consider the 550D.

What is the original size of your JPGs? Would resizing to 10" x 8" make them bigger (up sampling) or smaller (down sampling)? This makes a difference. Also, do you already have any image editing software?

Do this^, or wrap the whole thing in a Smart Object and apply sharpening to that.

For £500 look at a 550D with kit lens. The 650D will come in at £700 for body only.

I'm thinking about a 650D, the 9 cross points and 5fps sound tempting, but would like to see some high ISO comparisions first. Glad to see Canon putting some features back into this range, especially since the 600D didn't really expand on the 550D.
