Hi guys,

I'm thinking of buying a good quality general purpose lens for my Canon 550D, I'm just a bit stuck on what to buy. The kit 18-55mm covers a good enough range for my definition of general purpose, but the focusing mechanism is irritating especially if I have the polarizing filter attached.

I wouldn't like to buy a cheapo lens just in case I do decide to upgrade my body in the future. So perhaps something like an L lens (maybe the 17-40mm) but im aware that the 550d has a cropped sensor so, im sticking to wide-angle-ish ones

was wondering what you guys thought.

Hi, I use the 24-105L with a 550D and it produces some lovely photos. Great focal range and future proofed against any move to full frame. Not the widest but never proven much of an issue for me. Hope thats helpful. :)

If 17-40mm is about as much range as you think you'll need, Well yes its a very good lens especialy if you think you might upgrade to FF in the future.

But if its a decent walkaround lens your after then the Canon EF-S 15-85mm is hard to beat for the price and has a better IQ than the 24-105mm L lens on a cropped sensor.

+1 for the 15-85. Cracking lens and good build quality too.
