Just looking for opinions and for's and against's on these two camera's please. Also, if you think i should be looking at something else for the same money - feel free to point me in the right direction.

i am no expert but i had the 500d for 8 months and found it to be a good first dlsr
i then had the same dilemma 50d or 550d and after a bit of research decided to go for the 550d which has been described as canon's best consumer level camera to date
i considered the 50d but it is over two years old now so thought i would give it a miss even though it may be a better camera

i had a 50D and found it excellent.. If you don't mind not having HD video that is..

I've had the 500D since January and absolutely love it! It's very easy to use, feels great in the hand (once gripped) and in the 6 months I've had it have managed to get some stunning shots, a couple of 500D shots from last weekend below with no PP apart from some slight cropping :D

It really is a great camera :D

Thanks for the replys. I did go into a few camera shops and i did hold all three. The 550d did feel small ( sausage fingers ). The 50d felt better but has a bit more weight to it.

When feeling the camera's try them with the battery grips they make a massive difference...

i agree with you there nissanman.. I get a grip for every camera.. 1 for comfort, and 2 for the portrait shooting side of things.. Makes it so much easier!

And balance, the camera's feel a lot more balanced, especially with the bigger lenses on them :D

definitely.. Not so front heavy..

i had a grip on my 500d and ordered one straight away for the 550d
it did feel small without it

If you need HD Movie, choose 550D. If no, 50D is good due to its better build quality, more cross-focus points and more frames per second.

All 3 will serve you well.
I have the 500D and am very impressed with it - for the money it is a great camera and will suit you well if you are new to DSLRs.

I looked at the 50D and whilst I liked it I wanted the HD option that the 500D had (helped persuade SWMBO that we should get it and also the 550D or 7D weren't out at the time)

Filmed my son at the weekend (budding actor) and it has come out really well so if you do wnat the option of movie then its the 500D or 550D

Between the two its a case of £££s and also do you want the extras that the 550 has?

Went and had another 'play' today. Think the 550d is the way forward. Thanks for all the help guys. :)

That's weird because someone on here the other day couldn't find a 550D for love nor money
Think it was in the wanted section, perhaps you could impart its whereabouts to them

Hope you enjoy the new camera

Bought my wife a preloved 500D and she is delighted with it. I have the 7D but she finds this too large and heavy for her hands. The smaller 500D suits her perfectly. I would not however use it with the larger lenses e.g 100-400L. In my hands it feels unbalanced and not so easy to use as my 7D. I guess the same problem might apply to other smaller SLR's e.g 550 etc.
