Hi everyone, im sorry if this is in the wrong section.
Basically I have been into photography for a few years now but i have been working with a simple point and shoot canon camera. I was hoping some of you could advise me on buying my first dslr, Im looking for somethimg relatively cheap. I pretty much had my heart set on a canon 400D to start me off and the standard 18-55mm lens that comes with it.
I hope to use it for mostly pets, landscape and sport.
Help and advise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Jamie.

It sounds like a good choice and will cover most of what you need as a start. You can then see where it leads you.
I think people get too hung up on the gear and cheap older model DSLRs are still more than good enough for most.
Pick one that appeals to you and buy it and avoid asking anybody (including yourself) whether you bought the right camera as that is where it all starts to go wrong :)

Usual advice from me - get yourself to a (used/new) camera store and handle as many bodies as you can. Which ever feels right in the hand, and if you can try the menus too, thats the one to get.

If its a new camera, at least you know what you'd like, perhaps then look at previous models to get into it and save up. If the bug bites and you've been saving for a while, then the new models may have been replaced with better things.

Once you've got a body, get a kit lens probably as a first lens. Will allow you to practice and see what mm you shoot at. Then your choice between a prime at that mm or a short sharp zoom...

Enjoy!

if you have a price range have a look at good secondhand cameras which are older but at the same price as a new body. it is a good way to get a old but good body which is better than a new less good body for the same price :)
