All raw images need some sharpening to get the best out of them, any jpeg that comes from the camera will usually have had some in camera sharpening done to it, hence the difference. Post some images as the softness could be down other things than just the raw thing.

You'll need to give a bit more detail to get the best answer, as it all depends on what sort of focal length/range you are looking at? otherwise there is just too much choice.
£100 extra for 1GB of ram and a bigger hdd seems very expensive to me. What about buying the extra RAM yourself and fitting it? That or go with the 3GB then use the £100 saving to go towards a kick ass monitor :)
If you've got the option of getting IS, then get it, but as other people have said if the subject is moving it wont help. One other thing that you might want to think about for your next lens is that 50mm might well be to short, if you are shooting from the pit then getting a 200mm 2.8 zoom is...
