lens for natural histrory pics

ive got a 450d at the moment,£700 tops,
thanks

Reach is everything, especially with small birds, as a Nikon user I am not too familiar with the Canon used market, and what you would get 2nd hand for that budget.

In Canon the 100-400 zoom, 300 f4 (you can add a tele-convertor later) or 400 f5.6 are all well respected lenses, however probably nearer £900 used for the first 2.

The other option is third party, with Sigma being the popular choice on a budget, I have no real knowledge of their zoom range, but they certainly get up to 500mm with several models, I shall leave specific recommendations to others who have used them.

300mm f/4 IS can be £550-650 on ebay 2nd hand if you are careful. It would be my choice, and you can always add an excellent canon 1.4x converter.

The best value for money is probably the Sigma 150-500 which is what I use. The Canon 100-400 is also well liked by birders though more expensive. The Sigma has an awesome OS system, there are plenty of images around taken with the Sigma on which to base your opinion of the IQ. I paid £620 for mine so bang for buck, it is probably the best.
