Yes
im buying a dell insipiron 1545 laptop and there are two versions i could get:

1.Intel Pentium Dual-Core processor T4300 (2.10Ghz, 800Mhz, 1MB Cache) Genuine Windows(R) 7 Home Premium
3GB Memory
250GB Hard drive
£399

or

2.Intel Pentium Dual-Core processor T4300 (2.10Ghz, 800Mhz, 1MB Cache)
Genuine Windows(R) 7 Home Premium
4GB Memory
500GB Hard drive
£499

which is worth getting would 4GB really make much difference due to processor. hard drive doesnt matter because im buying a portable one but 500GB still sounds good.

cheers or any advice.

£100 extra for 1GB of ram and a bigger hdd seems very expensive to me. What about buying the extra RAM yourself and fitting it? That or go with the 3GB then use the £100 saving to go towards a kick ass monitor :)

Depends on the memory surely?? £100 for 250gb HDD space and 1gb ram could be a good thing. Some memory cost £70 for 2gb, so depends on make and speed of it

Chances are you won't notice any performance differences between 3GB and 4GB of RAM.

Is the larger hard disk worth £100 extra when you can buy a 500GB drive online for £60?

Have you considered spending some of the £100 difference on a separate USB drive that you could use for backup purposes?

Ah, just spotted that you have already mentioned that you are buying a separate portable drive as well

You also need to be clear as to whether they are supplying Windows 7 64bit version with the 4Gb PC. If it's just the normal 32bit version then only 3 of the 4gb will be recognised.

What are you going to do with the laptop that's likely to need more than 3gb memory?

cheers peeps, i did think the same as to who would need more than 3GB memory i dont, the most memory consuming thing i do is music, IE and CS3 open at the same time.

strangely pc world dont say what windows 7 bit there is whether its 32 bit or 64 bit. i think i might just go with the 3GB version and put my money to that lovely £115 dell 22" monitor for when im at home and needing a bigger screen.

If you are looking at Dell check out their web site. You may get a better set of options. Unlikly to get the laptop before Christmas though

Sounds like a sensible plan - enjoy! :)

I Ordered a fantastic XPS 1640 laptop from the Dell Outlet store (refurb unit or a cancelled order, but you'd never know). Got a fantastic spec (2.4ghz C2D / 500gb 7200 / 4 GB memory / 1920x1200 16" RGB Led Screen / 1gb ATI 4670 GFX etc) and with it not needing to be custom build i had it on my door within 3 days.

interesting how does option 1 performance compare to a macbook basic model?

:agree: I got my studio 15 from the outlet (2.4Ghz C2D P8600, 4GB, 320GB, 512MB Ati 4570, £450  )and it arrived 3 days later, there's some great deals to be had on there.

i'm now thinking of the possiblty of one of these dell outlet options.

just need someone to sell it to me ;-)
which one to go for etc. can anything good be had for £300 or could i get quite a powerful laptop for £500

but there's something about the macbooks which is luring me in to try one

my current laptop is over 4yrs old now and the one before that was 4 yrs before it died, so want something to last

3gb vs 4gb RAM might be a decent upgrade depending on how much of the RAM the on-board graphics card steals (if any, it may have its own dedicated ram).

If the on-board graphics uses 1gb of your RAM, then suddenly you're down to 2gb for actual Windows usage, and the 4gb option is looking pretty nice.

But, like others have said though, for £100 difference, considering you're going to be getting an external hard drive anyway, you're better off just buying your own replacement RAM and installing it yourself.
