I'm in the same boat as you, Justin. I tried out version 4 and then version 5 when it came out, and I really like where they're going with Exposure. When I finally ditch Lightroom I'll be getting Exposure. The Lightroom catalogue conversion works very well, and for me, that's a big selling...
I have v6 standalone. I'm guessing you accidentally ticked the box labelled 'Into Subfolder' in the Destination panel of the Import screen. The Destination panel is the lowest right panel (it may be closed by default). The very first item in the panel is a checkbox that says 'Into Subfolder'. Is...
I never asked, but I should have checked - do you have a backup? Always, always backup your photos (to at least two different locations ideally).
LR shouldn't have stopped partway through. I guess the obvious thing to check is that your external drive has enough space on it to fit all your photos!
It should be simple to do what you want. Here's a video that explains the process:

The key thing to remember is to move the photos using LR, otherwise LR won't know where to look for them.
I made that exact same trip a few years ago, from my home in Gloucestershire. I stayed at a B&B in Dornie so I could photograph Eilean Donan Castle, but that would mean getting up very early next morning to get to Uig.
Ouch. The reason it should work if you DON'T change the name is that the filepath stays the same. For example /Users/Me/Volumes/Images is the same path no matter which physical disk you use - as long as you keep volume names the same as you upgrade.
If the external drive is named the same, LR should 'see' the images. I do this regularly (I'm on a Mac, don't think this makes any difference). As long as the external disk is named, say 'Images' and the new, larger disk is also named 'Images' it will work automatically.
