Be grateful if someone could answer this for me !

I have a late 2012 27 iMac - it has 4 slots of RAM each with 4gb. If I wanted to increase this could I take 2 x 4 out and replace with 2 x 8 ?

I seem to recall reading that each memory bank should be the same ?

Problem is memory is £115 for 2 x 8 so 4 x 8 would be £230 !!

thanks

I seem to recall that you can. They work in pairs so 2 x 4gb and 2 x 8gb should be fine.
I did this with my 2012 iMac. It came with 8gb (2 x 4gb) and I upgraded to 24gb with 2 x 8gb chips.

What kind of benefit do you expect to see going from 16GB to 24GB?

You would also need to check your exact mac, as it may only accept 4g cards ??

Log in to the Crucial website, they should be able to tell you what your machine can accept.

+1 for the Crucial site, I've updated my 8gb 2015 iMac using their memory checker. It was hugely cheaper than Apple memory.
