Yes
OK, every now and again I right-click on photographs on this forum, and click "set as desktop background".

How do you feel about this? I don't think im breaching anyones copyright, its just occasionally i see an image that i think is superb, and I want to look at.
Am i in the wrong? should I stop?

Just wondering

In theory Rozzy, I'd say yes as you haven't asked to 'use' the image, regardless of what that use is...

However, it's often assumed that as the image/s have been placed on the internet by "the owner" then they're classed as being in the public domain.

Tis a catch-22 situation with the net and images.

If you were so inclined you could offer "the owner" some cash for the 'usage', but I guess a better solution would be to contact "the owner" and request the usage in return for an agreed donation to TP.

Just a thought...

The more common approach in the "take society" of today is to just keep stum and use the image for whatever purpose is required and hope the owner never finds out (ask DseeRed about that one who found his image on the back of a van!!!!), so well done you for being semi-honest :)

I have only used one image from here as a desktop background... well, my daughter wanted to use one. So I contacted the owner and he was delighted at (1) the fact that Heather asked and (2) that someone liked his image enough to use as a desktop wallpaper.

win-win

From my own point of view, would say you are in the wrong, I have chosen not to allow edits to my photos via the site user account, so for me I would say I wouldnt want you using without contacting, others may feel different though.

Whats the big deal? If someone wants to use a picture as a desktop image so what - you're never going to make any money out of selling an image for that purpose so if it's used on one persons desktop who cares?

'Courtesy and consideration' cares Andy.

Not looking to make money, just courtesy.

Agree.

I've used a couple of images but have always posted saying i've used it. So I wouldn't class that as stealing it.

 to Rozzy for being honest and bringing it up for discussion, I'll bet there are many that just go ahead without thought.

I think if anybody asked to use one of mine as a desktop, well, the answer would be an emphatic yes.

I don't care because all my photos are rubbish! :D

I think it's fine as long as you PM them (like Gandhi says) just to make sure or something like that. :)

Same here!!
I think I'll be waiting for that day for a long time....:lol:

I would be pleased with the courtesy of course, a little 'Would you mind awfully if I use this as a desktop' would be lovely.

Not losing any sleep if someone doesn't ask though. I only put small 700px versions up anyway.

Agree with everyone else - Hadn't really given much thought to it till this thread but if I was asked I'd be rather chuffed and most unlikely to say no.

I think finding your pics on a van (that's nuts), or someone elses website is rather different and I for one would be rather unhappy (though also surprised and quite pleased that someone thought they were good enough to steal) and wouldn't hesitate to seek some form of compensation.

I'd be chuffed to nuts if somebody used a shot of mine......

You'd have to tell me though, of course. Otherwise, how can I be chuffed :)

I sense a sudden increase in courtesy messages in peoples inboxes :D

I agree, i do the same with my profile

I only post at 800 pixs max so any desktop save of mine would look awful :D but thats probably more to do with the shots than the pixel count :(

I think it is only polite to ask

And I would be suprised if anyone actually took money for this type of use. I can see a donation to the forum would be nice mind.

However, it's often assumed that as the image/s have been placed on the internet by "the owner" then they're classed as being in the public domain.

I had a company try to use this argument a couple of months ago for taking an image of mine (from here by coincidence) and using it on their commercial website. :nono: They knew they were in the wrong. It didn't matter that the posted image was only 800 pixels, as it was only used on their website.

It would be nice if people asked to use an image. imho. ;)

I got a couple of stunning Harrier jump jet shots of Kevshore just before xmas to print one and frame for our son as a christmas prezzie (yes it was that good) before we went in head first and downloaded it I PMed Kev and asked if we could buy one from him and within a few mins Kev told me he would like the send the images by email as this would make a better shot and no fee was wanted as it was for a lad going back to afghan so we eventually agreed on a donation to TP which we did there and then. so I printed the one I wanted and once happy I deleted the images Kev sent its just common courtesy to ask first
At first we were going to print 2 as one was for the officers mess in the Falklands then his posting was moved to afghan but now it seems its been shifted again to NZ so if and when he goes to the falklands we will once again ask kev if its ok so we can send one over to the Falklands for the mess.

i would politely ask because as Chilliz said being nice might get you a perfect desktop size :D

Well if anyone ever wanted one of mine I would love to know about it, but I doubt very much they would be admitting to wanting one!!

Seriously, I think if you would like to use a picture it would be polite to ask first, and I reckon most people would be more than happy to send a better size to be used.

Never thought about it before, but what a great idea. Imagine an amateur being asked if someone can use their shot as a desktop. That would boost your confidence no end.

It may be assumed but that's not the case. The websites my images are hosted on have clear copyright (I don't know how that affects people getting the linked images from here though?)

TBH as long as it's not for profit and the image isnt altered I don't mind, although a courtesy ask would be good (I'd give them a larger copy to). In fact i've seen a couple of my images hosted on other sites, they haven't been modified so I don't mind.

Well if I'm posting low res images to the internet I can't really expect them to be left totally untouched. Just by viewing the image the user is downloading it to their computer, so, to my mind, there's no real difference if they use that image for a background. To that end I don't mind my low res's being used for a non-commercial purposes. If I did, I wouldn't ever post them on the internet! The only thing that would bother me about using one of my images for a desktop is that it wouldn't be sized and sharpened correctly for that use. The horror!!

Having only joined the forum today i haven't yet had the oportunity to properly look around or upload any pictures.

However... i think its just common courtesy to ask the picture taker for thier permission. I certainly wouldn't have a problem in someone using one of my pics as a desktop background, so long as thats all it was used for. It would just be nice to be asked.

As for someone using the images elsewhere ie websites, company logos or for profit, i think the only way to combat that is to lower the resolution and watermark across the picture. But then you lose some of the essence of the picture. Lose lose really :shake:

I have used two images from another site with no problem after asking the owner of the picture if it was OK to use as a desktop picture.
Both togs were very good about it and even asked why I had chosen that particular picture.
