Hi All...

I go to South Africa on 6th July - 27th July...

I've phoned loads of insurance companies and the only people who go above £300 (per single item) is Lloyds TSB.

Lloyds want £64 which will cover me up to £2500 total baggage and £750 per single item. I thought that is brilliant... because I will be taking the following:
  • Canon EOS 20D
  • Canon 70-300mm f4/5.6 IS USM
  • Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG Macro
  • Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.5/5.6
I paid £600 for the EOS 20D including KIT Lens, but I can't find it any less than £999 from Amazon? Surely that's not right!!

Anyway, none of the other items come to more than £750. I thought, brilliant!!

However - when I asked about my policy, they said my camera equipment will be classed as "1 group" which equates to a SINGLE ITEM!!

They have to go kidding me, I have at least £1300 of camera kit (excluding bag, filter, memory cards spare batteries etc)...

What do you guys do about insurance?

I've contacted my home insurance, but because I have contents insurance (and live in shared accomodation [a house share]) they will not cover me abroad! Grrrr!!

Morethan.co.uk cover individual items upto £1500 on our household policy and if my whole bag gets dropped in the sea then they would cover each item separately, not treat the whole lot as one item

Thanks all... do I have to subscribe to these for a minimum time? or can I just get covered whilst I go away?

Just had a look, and it'll cost me about £5 per month to cover £1750 worth of equipment. I've looked on line to price everything up... but everything there is WAY MORE than I paid for it - So, I think... it'll cost £1750.

Anyway, so for £5 per month, I can cancel after one month? And will this cover me abroad?

Thanks!
Amnesia

The £5 per month is a direct debit option with a finance group with whom you sign a contract for 12 months. You cannot cancel the policy after one month. The pay by month method also means you pay more overall, meaning it is much cheaper if you pay for the year right off.

As far as I know there is no-one who will insure equipment at full value for just a short period of time.

Thanks Juan,

Even still, £60 for £2k worth is stuff is not a bad option at all!! Especially for a year.

This will cover me abroad AND throughout the UK when I come back...

It only covers you abroad for 30 days a year for some policies, and you also have to let them know in writing when you will be abroad IIRC.

Excellent, and you use http://www.eandl.co.uk/camerainsurance/ too?
I'll be getting my quote today :D

No I am with Photoguard. I got a quote from E&L, but they won't insure second hand equipment. Which is a big no no for me as I get alot of my lenses used. Photoguard on the other hand will insure used equipment as long as you insure it for new replacement value. Also you can log in on their site from anywhere and add items and they just adjust your policy on the fly. This comes in handy if I go to NY for example and buy some stuff, I am on the site as soon as I get back to the hotel and am covered for that equipment within 5 minutes.

Well I called E&L and they said my second hand equipment is fine, as long as I give them the market value price.

I was going to say that for so little money, it's really worth keeping it on. I pay about £97 a month if it makes you feel any better. ;)

Haha! That is a lot of money.

But I leave on Friday 6th july! and most places won't insure me abroad now because I left it too late.

It's my own fault really, but now the previous post has got me worrying that my equipment isn't insured!

My EOS 20D KIT was from a seller through some forums who got brand new kits direct from Canon.

My Sigma and Canon lenses are both second hand. But E&L have got the market value price for both lenses and said it was fine.

Grrr... wish I could cancel. Never mind.

well look at it this way then. Your kit is at no greater risk while your away than it is normally. :)

But it was £60 cheaper before :P

Actually you don't have to let them know, and you are covered in both UK and Europe unlimited (from memory. It has been a while since I have read the fine print on my policy).

From the E&L summary in the "what is not covered" section...

"Any loss occurring outside the UK if we are not advised of the details of
travel in advance and we have accepted the same in writing."

Well, I have already let them know... and they said it's fine.

However - can I get some confirmation on the second hand policy thing? I've been unable to get through to them today.

Okay, all sorted now.
I didn't need unlimited world wide cover as they already cover me for 30 days worldwide.

I have the following insured.
  • CANON EOS 20D DIG SLR KIT: CAMERA BODY AND 18-55MM LENS - £750
  • CANON 70-300MM LENS F4.5.6 IS USM AF - £350
  • SIGMA 24-70MM F2.8 EX DG MACRO - £260

I've been doing searches for EOS 20D and I can't find it for less than £999. But I only paid £650 for it (including a lens) brand new from canon.

I have a receipt, and a bank statement. So, if the EOS 20D was in fact stolen, would they replace it? Or just give me what I paid for it?

Thanks,
Dan
