Yongnuo YN-560

Would it be good just to use YN speedlites for rim light (strip boxes) and have Canon/SB speedlites for key (because of the HSS)?
As Cistron says, HSS is just for overpowering the ambient if you're overexposed @ your max sync speed. I was shooting 1/2000th because I was shooting straight into the sun over my subject's shoulder. Without 6 Nikon SBs, my subject would've just been a silhouette.

For indoors doing dance stuff, your flash duration is going to be fast enough to freeze the action even if your shutter speed is 1/60th of a second. :)

Thank you both for the 101 flash lessons. I must got confused at one point between high speed sync and flash duration :bonk:

I am very tempting to ditch the flash heads I have planned and go for an array of 10 YN560s. That looks cool and does not involve extra PAT test for location work. :D

I've been impressed with the Yongnuo stuff I've bought in the past and did look at one of these until I read the review update on Strobist.

UPDATE: Six months in, there have been enough reports of dead or dodgy YN-560s that I cannot in good faith recommend this flash. IMO, if they would put $5 more into build quality and tweak the interface, they could have (or, could have had) a real winner.

The reports simply seem to be about some bad quality control and a few bad batches getting out. Not that fully working flashes seem to randomly die.

As long as you buy from a quality source with a good return/replacement policy, you'll probably be just fine.

I heard similar reports on the YN460-II (although not as many as the 560's apparently received), but mine were fully working when they got here, rock solid for months, and fully working when they left.

I bought a few triggers and give them about a 6 month shelf life. Went for the Elinchrom quadra in the end so using Skyports now.

Might get one of these to add to my set up as a hair light/background light.

I can't work out whether to go for the 560 or the 460-II. I am not clever enough to know from guide numbers etc.

The 560 is worth the extra for the zoom head, recycle time and much, much better optical slave.

Thanks very much - that is the kind of advice i needed :) Cheers,

Latest model with metal hot shoe.

No wonder there was a batch that didn't fire if it had a non metal hot shoe!

FWIW, I've found my YN560 plenty reliable. Haven't got the pilot button to ever work though!

Many flashes over the years have had a plastic shoe. It's the contacts that are important. :)

Mine came to day from the official store, and to be honest I'm very impressed with it.

Yes you have to push the pilot but VERY hard, but every thing looks to be working fine. I can even understand the fine power setting function :)

The only tiny, does not matter, who cares, issue is that unlike a 580EX, it does not auto zoom when you pull the diffusion panel out.

Very good value for money I think.

Funny, that's one feature I wish I could disable on the SB-900. Sure I want my zoom setting wide, but not necessarily as wide as the flash tells me it wants to be. :)

I have two and love them. Consistent, reliable and powerful, with fast recycle and great optical slaves.

So these will work as optical slaves to a Nikon SBXXX, or built-in commander (obviously pointing the right way) without having to resort to wireless flash triggers?

Hi 23rd,

Where did you purchase them from please. Does FITP stock them?

Thanks,

John

Cotswold Photo on eBay. They're more expensive, but Trevor guarantees them for 12 months. Well worth the extra.

Yes, in s2 mode.

Any reason why I shouldt buy these? All the specs seem fine and looking to use them for still life, portrait ect ect!

I have 3 of them.

If you shoot manually with your flashes and don't need HSS then go for it.

Hss? Sorry new to looking into lighting gear! And when you say manual is it like the 460? Just i liked my friends 460 but 560 specs are better for such a small price difference

Coming back to strobism after a few years away, just saw these and wondered how they compared to the sb24 and sb28 I have used in the past ?

I've been looking at these on Ebay as I want to use them for some high speed photography linked to a sound/laser trigger.
Are these going to be suitable for this does anyone know?

Gareth

I've got 3 in the post as we speak, also have a friend with a laser / sound speed trigger so can test them if you like

Cheers Sam - would be really interested to see if they do. Don't fancy buying a couple and finding they don't do what I want.

No problem,
If you could pm me what info and speeds you want tested as i have't seen/used a high speed shutter yet.
I will be attending my local camera club on Tuesday night so will let you know soon!
