So I get home....

YODEL have delivered something....

The driver has ticked the box to say "Left in a safe place as requested by the sender"

The "safe place" according to Yodel driver is our doorstep, approx 7 ft away from a public pavement.

Is the package

a) There or

b) Not there.

Take a guess. Have only ordered one thing lately so know what it is supposed to be. Pretty sure the sender would not say "leave in a safe place" - certainly never saw it on Amazon when placing order.

Grrrrrrr.

Did the delivery card state "doorstep" as the safe place? Could it be anywhere else, round the side of the house, behind a bin, etc?

in the bin, thrown over a back fence (not necessarily yours), under a car, on top of a car, folded in half and jammed through the cat flap, in a recycling box , still in the delivery van... the options are endless

you realise they are called yodel because after getting a delivery the normal reaction is to go OOOOOOOOOOHHHH FOOOOOORRRRR FUCCCCKSSS SAAAAAAKE

Printed is "I have left your parcel in a safe location as requested by the sender." This has a x by it (may be their signature as in 'x') and hand written is Door Step. We don't have a side to the house - mid terrace and no way would he get in the back gate! (Yes have checked the back door!)

have you checked he didnt try to throw it over the house or throw it over the back gate ? ( I know someone who had a laptop delivered by yodel and the driver decided that throwing it over the fence onto the patio was an appropriate delivery technique)

Report straight to Amazon and insist on replacement and non yodel carrier.

During the free month of prime I was stunned to find Amazon were still using Yodel. For that reason I wouldn't waste my money. If it guaranteed those clowns would never get anywhere near any parcel then I might have considered it.

Thankyou. Will do. Great idea.

Has someone got a free 7d2

Check with neighbours ? I had a parcel from Jao a member here sent with myherpes and they also left it in plain sight, luckily neighbour spotted him doing so and after he drove off took it in

Jeff.. what is this canon muck you speak of... donetello - will do , it's possible but not probable...

We had this with this bunch of cowboys not long ago

Our son had ordered £300 of clothes online and they left the parcel on the doorstep.

Our doorstep is 2 feet from the path and we don't even have a gate.

No surprises that the parcel went walkies is there.

i have gone into full on Lynton.. CEO has a very nice email..

Lynton is in norwish though so if thats the case the neighbours have probably been to the pawnshop and then the off licence ;)

DPD are great for doing this too but they also take photos of stuff they have left at my doorstep. As mentioned mail Amazon. I had a go pro left at my door and it wasn't there when I got home. Amazon replaced it no questions asked. (quite worrying really )

DPD here are great. We get a text telling us a 1 hour delivery window and a request for alternative delivery instructions if the window's not convenient.

Why companies still use Yodel I do not know. Surely it's not worth the complaints.
DPD on the other hand, have always been excellent (can only speak as find). Love the hour delivery slot notification, where as Yodel, daren't go out of earshot of the front door!!

It's all to do with costs though. Maybe the number of complaints isn't that high when compared to the number of deliveries that they do.

Amazon informed. Was through one of their resellers and it seemed to have made it from Reno, NV. to my doorstep. A journey of several thousand miles. Yodel messed up at the last few feet and no parcel.

5pm last night Yodel told me would be contacted within 28 hours (bizarre time frame!) However 1 hr 12 mins to go...

Not disputing the fact it was left, chances are it was, just left in a rather stupid place!

Same here.

Can't fault their delivery & collection service.

Yep DPD are brilliant.
Although to be fair, our local Hermes man is very good too. His name's Linton (with an i) funnily enough.
Can't fault our Royal Mail postman either.

All in all, as somebody who does a lot of online shopping and often misses deliveries I'm bloody lucky with the people we have on our route.

None of this is really helping our Lynton (with a y) though :(

Quality all depends on your local driver - so its the couriers fault for employing numpties.

I've never had an issue with Yodel - people rave about DPD but I had terrible service from them. The driver twice knocked on an external door to flats instead of pressing buzzers & as no one lives in the hallway no one answered! The parcel got returned to sender and they have to send again with parcel force

Luckily I can get things delivered to work where it's safw or my parents where they at least have somewhere safe to leave stuff.

Our DPD chap is a good guy it seems, I think the vast majority of our recent Amazon orders have ben delivered with DPD and always come at the same time of day which suits us quite nicely!
On the other hand, the myhermes driver is a nutcase, and comes at almost any time of day that suits her...

DPD as a lot of you say are great, yeah I get an email and text of the delivery times but no use if I'm 100 miles away and it gets dropped on my door step. They are mostly good but for loosing a camera I can't say they are brilliant.

Email from the CEO:

Mr Smith

I am sorry your parcel has gone missing.

Not all retailers tell us to "leave safe". The requirement to leave safe is determined by the delivery service that retailer buys and this is detailed on the label and the drivers handheld device. The driver is obliged to follow the instructions on the handheld device and must leave safe if instructed to do so. All of our drivers are instructed to find somewhere safe or to attempt to leave with neighbour; however, sometimes parcels get left on the doorstep if there is no alternative.

The leave safe location is in a drop down menu so the driver will select the closest to the actual location e.g. Doorstep or front porch if left near the front door. This suits most leave safe locations.

I will investigate why the parcel was left in an exposed location. Could you let me have your parcel number and post code?

Your recourse for refund or replacement is with your supplier as we have completed the delivery service we were contracted for. We do not compensate for consequential loss.

Kind regards.

Oh I love a reply like this. Nothing to get the mind working overtime which I wait for his call. :)

Genuinely, looking forward to the battle. My only disappointment is that I am not the shipping company customer....but the receiver.

These days I get stuff delivered to work. It's open 10 hours a day.

DPD have always been awesome. I've had UPS deliver to neighbours. I've had Yodel and HDNL report that they've been unable to deliver (during the day time, when we're open?!!?). I've had Parcel Force return the parcel to a local post office (which opens only 9-5). Royal Mail have only ever let me down once during a delivery where it was sent to a different post office for delivery rather than the local one so it took an extra day.

That's a rubbish reply- they haven't delivered anything as far as I'm concerned.

Email from the CEO:. . .

WHAT???
So he's saying that if they're instructed to leave it in a safe place they have to leave it somewhere no matter what . . . even if that's on the doorstep when no other 'safe' place presents itself?
That's ridiculous and I'm actually starting to feel sorry for their delivery drivers.

Dats becoz he are beyond help, innit...

That is a very fair point :D

Even if they acted like total bell ends?

Its probably not very practicle but i thikn consumers should be given the choice at check out as to what courier they would like to use and pay accordingly (i assume thats how they would play it) - I would pay extra for royal mail/parcel force if i only had the option of delivering to my home, simply because, if it goes back to the depot, it is with a 5min walk away, or a 10min drive. Yodel, DPD, UPS, blah blah are all 20 - 40mile round trip which is just silly. As i say, I feel very lucky that i can get stuff delivered to work and the post room staff dont mind (i also have started buying them biscuits as i do get a lot delivered as i foster cats so get deliveries for them too).

DPD and their tracking etc is all very well, but really, large % of the people ordering things work 9-5 and are not going to be in when the courier comes, giving a n hour window is better for people at home so they can arrange around it, but we read so many stories of them not even knocking, etc. there needs to be some quality controls put in place as the serivice seems to vary a large amount nationwide depdning on drivers so there is obviously some training problems.

+1 for this. I would love to be able to choose someone else other than HDNL/Yodel/Amazon Logistics. Even RM do a better job.

Agree - I have to pay for postage but some companies either don't let you post to a different shipping address other than billing address, or the courier just doesn't bother attempting a delivery and sends it back to the depot. Multiple times I've spent going to UPS or Yodel depots either because I didn't have a choice of courier, couldn't specifically select a delivery date, or couldn't get delivery to my workplace. I've even had orders arrive a day or two earlier than planned which causes problems.

What might be an idea would be a camera worn by the delivery driver to show that they've been to the house and pressed the doorbell/used the knocker. No idea how feasible/costly/practical it might be, not to mention security issues.

Have to agree with everyone else, DPD are by far the best from the recipients point of view.

Yodel are dire, and Parcelforce are appalling. Locally MyHermes aren't that bad - but they're set-up is designed to be hit-or-miss and it always comes down to the local agent.

I too can have delivered to work and with hindsight should have done. 2nd reply from the Ceo.... They maintain nothing wrong. He now has a pic of the front of my house and I have asked him to highlight any out buildings door steps and safe locations to leave... Just leading on at the moment before going for it. I agree contract is between supplier and courier however some due diligence needs to be practised by courier. Clearly hasn't been. Made it 5000 plus miles from Reno Nv. Only for yodel to balls it up.

There's one website we use that has free delivery by generic courier or an extra £1 for DPD - needless to say we always pay the extra pound because we love DPD to the home address. DPD to my work is useless, claim no-one answers despite being a receptionist there, and a buzzer in each office for is the receptionist is away from the desk for any reason.

With DPD we get an email when we palce the order advising of the day, then the evening before delivery a reminder and specifying the time slot saying if this isn't convenient you can reschedule, deliver to somewhere else (may be a time delay) instruct to leave with a neighbour etc.

TNT is good by us too - if we're not in the local convenience store (open 6am-10pm) is their designated drop off point.

Oh did I mention my call at 8.15 this morning and a call back 2 to 3 hours and my further call at 12.15 to be told escalation team back to me within 15 mins. Have a guess tp.... No call.
