Xmas food shop

Just been on Ocado prices are reasonable, may give them a try at some point :)

Some of the supermarkets were a bit iffy to begin with but I think they've upped their game now. I occasionally use Sainsbury's and had no problems lately.
But Ocado are my favourite because you get less substitutions (they can manage their stock levels better).

Just had a look and it says £20 off for your first shop with them, ahh got to spend at least £80 minimum though. Only me and the missus so we don't spend that much on a weekly food shop, more like £50 or so..

So that means the next £30 only costs you £10! Bottle of scotch?

Or stock up on washing powder. Less fun.

Was going to get a frozen Turkey while in the shop today, already had a few frozen items, so maybe not enough room. Will make some room, and get one next week.

Are you anticipating Armageddon?

AKA Christmas :D When the shops are shut for a day :shudder:

Well you say that, and yet the little Indian run store around the corner from me will be open as usual, and the small Co-op at Bobbing will be open all day as usual. :-)

Thats true enough, my local one is open as well ( well it has been up till now anyway)

I am tempted to grab a few bits for Xmas, but knowing what I have already got to get for my normal shop, just can't be ar*ed. If I grab anything this early, it will be either a frozen Turkey, space permitting, or tubs of sweets booze etc.

Done my Xmas food shop this morning, while actually I haven't, but I've ordered enough to reserve a delivery slot a couple of days before Xmas, and will just edit the order closer to the time when I know exactly what I'll be needing, placed and order a few weeks ago for my meat etc so really pretty much set...do need to order some presents

That's what I do too. Shopping like a pro :)

Obviously a couple of pretty clued up people, something worth remembering :)

I learnt from my first Christmas of being an online shopper that things are different for Xmas, usually I can log on the evening before I want a delivery and there's plenty of available, the first Xmas I was doing shopping online, I logged on a few days before to find there was literally only one time slot left, I've never made that mistake again, so yes you need to plan in advance for an online Xmas food shop to get yourself a time slot...but of course you can edit that shop up to the day before :P

Clever getting your slot, and editing at a later date :)

The key thing is to remember to edit it, else you risk ending up with 2 boxes of Persil and a bottle of Highland Park delivered by a rather confused driver.

Er, so I've heard.

I suppose that we are lucky with our Christmas shop, because there are only two of us (no children), and neither of us like turkey. We usually opt for lamb (shoulder or leg for slow roasting) or rib of beef (as long as I can get it cheap enough), or maybe a nice free range chicken (Label Rouge are tasty).
We are still on our two meals a day and losing weight (and most importantly saving money), so will definitely not "pig out" at Christmas.
I will usually make a terrine of some kind (maybe a couple), which will last a week, using pork mince, sauteed kidneys and a mixture of caramelised onions, garlic and chopped mushroom, all arranged in layers in a loaf tin, finished off with a latice of smoked pancetta to cover, then you cover the whole lot in silver foil and cook for around 40 - 50 minutes @ 160C in a bain marie - very tasty either hot or cold.

Mines booked and ordered for the 21st, got some stuff in the basket but waiting to add more as they start bringing it in.
Also gives me a couple of days to pop to town for any last minute bits I may want and fresh veg etc :D

Only me and the missus and a cat and a dog for Xmas, and I am the only one that dislikes Turkey. So it looks like we are having a Turkey then, but I will make sure I get a nice piece of Beef :) . I was half thinking of getting a large Chicken and trying to fool the missus lol

Just me and the kids and cat, I'm sure the cat would love a turkey but it's not his choice :D
I'll either get a 3 bird thingy or small joint of beef and pork.. Haven't decided yet.

Try it....if you don't come back we'll know she wasn't! :D

I am sure she will be able to tell the difference, as my Roast Chickens are lovely tender and tasty always. Turkey is always boring dull tough and tasteless, oh and always dry :(. I will get the smallest Turkey I can find ;)

Exactly the reason I don't bother with one, I'd be happy with a decent chicken but kids aren't so keen

Check out Nigel Slater's recipe for Marsala Duck with crushed potatoes. Totally foolproof and delicious. Was a favourite of mine pre-veggie days :)

Started my Xmas food shop this morning, small piece of Beef and a small Turkey breast joint. Not faffing about with a massive Turkey this year, keeping things nice and simple :)

Started my Xmas food shop this morning,
Strangley so did I, while I was driving down the A11 this morning I collected I Roe deer and 3 pheasants,
Its looking good.

I'm not sure if Yule logs or Sherry trifle comes in "road kill" though?

Ah they must have been from the very rare arachnideer.

Were they "Hind" legs?

I went into my butcher's and said "I'll wager you £20 you can't reach the sirloins on that shelf".

He said "No. The steaks are too high".

Think mine has the slight edge, even though it is an old one ;)

The meat is stacked high and priced very low, seems nobody is all that interested. Thought there would be more people snapping up the joints of meat for Xmas. I did not buy any, as I bought some the other week, and stuck them in freezer..
