Anyone else got the general error (3 red sections)?

This is my 2nd Xbox and rather annoyed about it. However online I read a post about wrapping it in a towel turning it on and leaving it to overheat, then let it cool down and turn it back on. Surprisinging this worked....!!!

But then when watching a HD-DVD it died again, so today I wrapped it in a duvet, and accidentally left it in there for about 50 minutes... lets say when i remembered and went to remove it, it was very very hot.

But its now working again.. It just doesnt make sense (like most Microsoft Products).

Yes, think it's something like 3 years against RoD failures these days.

I had an early model, which died just before they came out with the extended free warranty, but kicked up such a fuss they eventually caved in and repaired/replaced it FoC - or more likely, they knew the extension was just round the corner.

Well just registered it:

# Device: Xbox360 Hardware
# Serial Number: 5XXXXXXXXXXX
# Warranty Status: Out of Warranty
# Warranty Type: Standard
# Warranty Start:
# Warranty Expiration: 11/18/2007 6:59:59 PM

Dang!!!

I'd be careful wrapping it in a towel - There are cases of these setting alight.

I'm fairly sure that you can repair them - isnt it poor solder joints? It was covered ages ago in one of the tech sites I use. If I remember which/where I'll post it.

cheers.

Ive emailed microsoft (i have to deal with them at work and really dont want to on my personal time as they are idiots), so see what comes of it.

serious fail rate on these things, its what is putting me off buying one. PS3 and Wii seem to be fairly good, not a huge amount of problems being reported. Get one, Bluray is the way forward for hidef now...

aye blu-ray did win, but only because it cheated... But i dont mind, its not like i paid 500 for a player (which is what a decent bluray player is at the moment). Shame HD lost as it was the better technology and the disc's are where cheaper. But I can pick up brandnew HD-DVD for £5 now :D not like im going to sell my xbox HD Drive as whats the point... better than paing 20-30 for a disc.

However I remember when DVD first came out, before it even came out over here I had a player imported from America, and was shelling out upto £40 a disc :S

The newer xboxes are meant to be much better these days.

3 red lights is a general hardware failure. You can try many different mods on each... which I am happy to explain how to do (as i have done them all... successfully :D) if you wish. However, it does void the warranty so I suggest trying to get a new one first.

oh dear, looks liek someones been reading too many posts on certain 'enthusiasts' websites...all the financial reports are in from the major studios, and the only one with a big wad of cash was paramount...and that was from toshiba..

as for better tech, hddvd was ready when it hit the streets, but thats all. it reached its potential very fast, thats why lots of releases with DD+ and not trueHD or DTS HDMA..anyway, i digress...

BD from 13.99 if you shop around, dont go to high street stores, go to places like asda and Play.com

the newer 360 has a redesinged board, so should not get too hot, i may well get one if they prove to be more reliable.

yup.

Toshiba are now trying to drag out the life of DVD and releasing either a new format for DVD which will have greater quality, or releasing a series of DVD players which can upscale to 1080P..

Its all rubbish.

Anyhow Microsoft have got back to me from the email I sent, they have asked me to contact their customer service department.. Reads like someone is sending out bulk emails to clear a queue down :D

I'm on my 4th 360 now. Two of them have failed and spouted garbled nonsense on to the screen and the third one's DVD drive refuses to open when I tell it to - I have to dig a penknife in and lever the drawer open to get a disc in or out. Bloody pieces of junk. 'Luckily' the first two died within months so Game swapped them over the counter without a grumble. The one with the dodgy drive tray is back in it's box, in the loft as a spare. I went and bought an 'arcade' system last week and shoved my harddrive on it. It's definately a fair bit quieter than the other two and seems to run cooler. (Finger crossed.)

Here's my current list of 360 and accessories that have died:

3 x consoles
4 wireless controllers
1 plug and play battery pack
1 PSU

:(

I had the same with my first xbox, it just died but within a couple of months of getting it from Game so just took it back in and swapped it.

Annoying that its died as Battlefield: Bad Company is out and really wanted to play it.

toshiba reckon they can upconvert to near Bluray quality...top end Realta chips and dedicated scalers struggle, so how the hell will toshiba get that far with a 'cheaper than Bluray' DVD player? They just want to keep the revenue stream from DVD, so scare tactics and marketing BS straight out of the Sony book of marketing!

I have been thinking of getting a 360 elite, but the thing that is putting me off is all the talk about breaking and stuff :(, i like playing on them and there good fun. Also the thing that is putting me off is the fact that i have a top notch computer that i got free :D:D from on of my suppliers so not sure if i need anything else on to play games :(
Is the Elite worth it do you think? im not getting a PS3 i loke the 360 controler better :D

Im with you on this deadlysmurf.. the xbox 360 controller is much better than the PS3..

My house mate has a PS3 and the pads weight nothing, doesnt feel like you are holding anything, the xbox 360 sits in the hands nicely, and its rather chuncky which is good if you have large hands.

Ohh the old Jaguar Controller, now that was a pad, or the original Xbox pad..

Called Microsoft and they are going to repair it free of charge (inc shipping) and send it back to me within 4-5 weeks... bonus :D
