Right then I'm looking for your thoughts, in a kind of what would you do scenario.

Today I bought a new camera body from a well know high street camera shop, all fine. Then when I got home I noticed the seal on the box was broken, and then when looking at the camera I've found a flash card inside with images of the shop (and outside of the shop on it). With it being dark I haven't been able to take some test shots to see if the sensor is clean (I'll do that tomorrow).

Now for the dilemma, should I take it back and ask for a new sealed box, or should I just live with it despite it obviously being used? What would you do?

I’m tempted to take it back out of principal as it was sold as new and has been used (however brief the use has been).

Take it back. End of.

But save the card :D

hell yeah take it back! you went to buy a new camera not one that the shop staff have been playing with! i'ed kick up a stink aswell!

I'd take it back straight away. Same thing happened to me once with some gear, I took it back, they swapped it no problem.

Take it back. I went into Jessops last week to buy a new body, and was presented with two opened boxes, and one body with a scratch on the upper LCD panel. Needless to say I went and spent my hard earned somewhere else. If it's being sold as new, it should be brand new and unused.

Well that's quite conclusive, off it goes tomorrow. Thanks for the replies, it just confirmed what I felt.

ps, It was Jessops, just so you know.

If you went into the said shop and wanted to feel the camera to see if it suited your needs and then decided not to buy would you be happy to pay a fee for the camera then being used ??

They do generally have display models for people to play with and see if they like the camera or not don't they?

take it back i would

but i bought a display lens from jessops, and no discount given, but was last one and wanted one

Take it back, kick up a bit of a fuss, (and if you're feeling cheeky try and get a memory card or something thrown in for wasting your time/money/petrol). You don't want to find out later something someone else did has damaged it or anything.

They wouldn't unseal a brand new one just for a demo (Or they shouldn't), that's what the seals are for.

I can see where you are coming from, and if shops want to let people handle the camera, then fine, but they should have a shop model for such occasions. My gripe is that I've been sold a 'new' camera that clearly isn't. If i'd been told it was an ex shop model, I would not have bought it.

The fact that it has been used inside and out of the shop means it's been used as a demo model. That means it's not new.

Take it back and either demand a new one or a suitable discount for it being an ex demonstrator.

That's not on and I'd be making it quite clear with a quiet chat with the manager.

He got a memory FOC already...:D

Make sure you give it a test run to see if it suits your needs before you take it back

Looking at the file numbers on the flash card I'd say almost 70 photos taken.

Defo take it back, the cheek trying to sell you a used one for new price!

I'm not sure there's a problem worth fussing about.

I recently bought a £1k lens from Jessops (Canon 100-400mm L). I tried two identical copies to make sure I got a good one, and took some test pics. One was new, boxed, and the other was their display lens. They were both fine, but I kind of preferred the feel of the zoom on the display model. I'm not sure why - probably just my imagination. I checked it over, including the serial number which was recent, it was perfect, and I bought it. Presumably, now somebody has also bought the other lens that I 'used'.

Isn't it a bit unrealistic to expect a shop to keep demo models, yet never sell them? On the other hand, unless the camera you bought was the last one they had in stock, then why didn't they just give you a sealed box? I dunno. A tricky one, but I wouldn't get too upset if the camera had only been unboxed and had a few frames taken with it. That's good as new, and maybe part of the price you pay for being able to handle the thing before buying. An invaluable service IMHO. You certainly can't do that if you buy on-line...

Richard.

I'd return the camera as it's been used but i'd be happy to receive it back at a discount, 70 shots is neither here not there

Was this bought from a shop or delivered?

I think it would make a big difference...

I would take it back and demand a sealed box, but perhaps consider keeping the one you have if they are prepared to do some refunding of hard earned cash on the deal. If you have had it out of the box, you can see whether its still in pristine condition or not. Selling it as an ex-demonstrator is perfectly acceptable, selling an ex-demonstrator as a new unit is not. :nono:

If you buy a car you can test drive the demo model but you don't expect that to be the one supplied as new. Goods are goods and if the OP expects a sealed box for his money he's entitled to it.

The other point is if it was a canon they don't come in sealed boxes, or aleast the 5 I have bought new didn't. and the shot count of 70 may well be from several different cameras as the numbering from the card by default.

but how many of the canons you've bought have come with a card already in them?

Jessops have an unfortunate lack of understanding when it comes to selling display stuff as new - like the display cabinet full of Canon gear which I saw collapse in one branch, bringing all the lenses on the top shelves down on those below. The salesman just laughed and put everything back where it had been...

It does happen though, I've known dealers who used to disconnect the speedo cable and run the cars on trade plates, give them a spruce up and put them back on the lot.

A few years back Mercedes even sent out an official document to their dealers with details of how to remove the "delivery" mileage from it's cars :suspect:

You paid for a new camera & were not given one. End of story as far as I can see, get it back there pronto.

I wish photography had such a better high street chain store than Jessops, Jessops are terrible considering the amount of money people spend with them.

Agreed, I normally try to avoid them, but they were within £10 of the cheapest price acording to camerapricebuster and I just wanted it now, instead of waiting for postage.

Take it back you paid for a new one and that's what you should get. If the moan ask them what the discount is for an ex-display model because that's what they have sold you.

I got my Sigma 105 Macro from Jessops... when I looked at the cap said Tamron!

I never took it back as it would have meant an hours drive and I wanted to play with my new toy. Although I now know to check before I leave the shop :)

Sorry, but I don't agree that Canons do not come in sealed boxes.

I have bought both a 5D and a 5D MkII new in the last 12 months and both were received in factory sealed boxes, the MkII was only 10 days ago and I remember it very well.

Any chance it was the last one in stock?
