well this "TEXT" portrays you and it represents your business

so in full answer , no i would not hire you sorry

what is that supposed to mean-im sorry im not a bow to everyone type of guy:thumbsdown:

Some people I never will understand. if i took every bit of advice I was given I would no longer be me would I. But a clone of everyone else.

Then you should have shown a finished product , not a half started one.

Why are you bothered about the stock side of it. those images are on the image file server and might sell if im lucky. Do you only start using alamy when you have 5000 images. No you upload them as you go.

im not a pro website builder

there are plenty of better hosts out there if you want to build yourself

clikpic
photium

they are popular but still lots more

even store to go is quite good

your offering a professional service , you need a professional image and your website is your main advertising tool, it reflects you as a person/photographer and what you are offering the way of quality.

But you are wanting to market a VERY PRO service? I think you know the issue, and how to rectify it :)

Stick to taking good photos, and get a pro to build you a site you can be proud of, something slick and confident which will make your clients say "wow".

You have a talent and the potential to make bucketloads, just take the advice and enjoy your new venture when it all starts kicking off :)

Gary.

Thankyou gary. Im not a nasty or vindictive person. this thread seems to be everyone wants to make me out to be horrid and nasty. why? im not perfect. But im not a complete walkover either:bang:

Sorry clik pic is crap-you cant sell images on it.

Photium looked at it and was even more basic than image file.

Image file is a pro site. they have 9 million images on file and thousands of photographers. i just need to make the site look better-maybe with the help of a pro.

Im not a pro website builder either, check my web out, www.richardgrebby.co.uk and im sure people would say a ton of things on my site :p

But you need to take a look at other decent websites (not mine) out there and see what you like about them.
I have done a lot of video work, and ive seen people that when they get movie packages, they do all the wipes and fades and transitions in the programs arsenal. This just looks like a mess.

If you really do love the yellow outline, subdue it and maybe it will work better. The lens flare is above the G, I guess its not exactly a lens flare more like a sunspot i suppose.

Maybe something like this?

well your business will fail then wont it , plenty of people here have offered you advice/help. I think you will find that you need to bow and be patient to achive the one thing you need in business, KEEPING THE CUSTOMERS HAPPY.

you take on board what advice you want to , you dont need to do everything everyone says. Its your business so you run it how you wish but if you ask for advice your going to get it even its its good or bad.

As for understanding people , maybe they dont understand you.

I think everyone is misunderstanding what is being written on these pages. And I guess a lot of it is, if someone offers advice and negative crit, and rightly or wrongly you take issue with it, the person who offered crit might take issue with you for asking and then complaining :D

Confused? I am. At the end of the day, you know you are a good tog, with a market available to you, and I dont think anyone here thinks your a knob. Maybe your back is up as you got more negative crit than you would like, and fair game - it can be upsetting. Ignore your emotions though for ten seconds, and think about what you have just been given. Advice which will take YOUR BUSINESS to the next level!!! As a result of this thread, if you follow the advice, not only will you be taking great pics, but you will have a great site to show them on. It's a win win situation for you :)

Gary.

Then sell your pics on their own on a sister site.

one site for portfolio and one for selling , you can even put the time shares on there aswell if you like :p

ahhhg sorry-thought you meant on my work.

I have signed up for the extended version of my site and should be able to do more with it. If not will pay a pro to do it.

One thing that does strike me as odd- i am a perfectionist to my detrament. often having paid loads of money for a pro site. When i have seen lots of pro togs using simple websites I figured it was the norm. I have seen very few that have made much impact with me. those that have are usually nationally renowned award winners who are seldom few.

I now see I have to be my usual self and go the extra mile and come up with something wow

Makes it too confusing for me mate. i have my domain name at this locale and I can build a better site after ive upgraded-which will be done monday.

I dont think its odd to be honest. For example, Duncan Kerridge (I think is his name), I would hire him for my wedding if he built his site in MS WORD with clipart and comic sans 16pt, as his pics are quite simply, out of this world - breathtakingly perfect. When you can take photos like that, they take centre stage and a crap site is less of an issue. BTW - his site is great, but doesnt need to be if that makes sense.

However, if your images are great, but not WOW, then you need to up the game elsewhere to compensate. It's like adding a nice border to a not as nice as it should be photo. Works wonders :)

I think you should go into any business with the idea of being better than the competition. But sometimes if you go for wow'ness the people looking at the site can be buried under all the extra crap. Much like my website I suppose :p

Haha you fell at the 1st hurdle for me :D, I run 64 bit windows, and 64 bit Internet Explorer. Guess what? No flash

I cannot stand fully flash sites, fine they have impact and wow factor and can look great, but they are so NON standard and NON user friendly, drives me insane.

G.
Edit: Love the photos on the homepage, which does work.

DM - sorry for the slight hi jack.

But you see what I mean. I relish the chance of becoming one of them wow photographers. i will try and in time maybe. But its hard getting into business and I already run one and was just hoping I could save a few quid initailly. but hey lets see what we can come up with. Ill get it written by J.K Rowling and get it built by well I dunno any famous web designers LOL

I was going to offer you some advice on how I got from a similar site to yours to what I have now for very little money, but to be honest I'm not sure you would listen, sorry if that sounds harsh, but everyone is trying to give advice, which you asked for and all i can see is negativity to those who have done anything other than say the site is ok.
You asked the question, you got answers with very detailed explanations, what more would you like??
On the subject of website stats, I have had your site open in a separate tab since starting to read this thread and only briefly looked at, in the 10 seconds i did, I made up my mind on whether I would hire you or not. So do you still think web stats mean anything???

Love your opening line :D

"This is me and I shoot people" haha -

Wow, really no flash with IE64? well thats good to know. To be honest I could easily remake that website into html which I think I will do someday.
What happens if you use mozilla3 with Vista64?

Sorry for the hi-jack reply ;)

Dunno, I hate firefox (and I hate designers who love to make it their number 1 priority to get a site working on IT before IE!!!)....

IE: 85% market share
FF: 10% ish market share?

Brainstorming meeting...

Ahh yes, lets spend a month making sure it works on FF. We can deal with IE later. :bang::bang::bang:

I use IE, as its what the majority of my target audience uses. I will get a site working in Firefox, but not at the expense of IE :)

BTW - not suggesting you choose either or, just fancied a rant. I am off to download FF3, will test, and will report back in this thread via an edit.

Gary i know you know what your talking about based on what youve said about being a web designer-but when people have visited my site firefox has been a larger number than ie

Fair enough :) Maybe its the visitors we attract, I get about 4,000 visits a day to 8 or 9 sites, all finance related, and it has been running about 85% ie for the last 3 or 4 months.

I guess if you have a lot of techheads, I.T savvy's on your site, FF will rule.

Didn't work. Seems there os NO flash player for any 64 bit browser.

G.

i just found this..

Vista x64 comes with IE7 (and Media Player 11) in both 32 and 64-bit
flavors. This is because the vast majority of plugins are 32-bit and
won't work with the 64-bit IE7. Flash is one such plugin. There is
no 64-bit flash player. Adobe says they are working on it, but until
they actually do, Flash is strictly 32-bit (even 64-bit Linux doesn't
have it).

Also, Vista x64 (and XP64) use the 32-bit IE as the *default* browser,
so the little "e" on the desktop and quicklaunch are in fact the 32-
bit IE. You need to go out of your way to launch the 64-bit IE unless
you change those shortcuts. In Vista it's on the "Start" menu near
the top, and is identified as Internet Explorer (64-bit). Again, this
is done because they assume you want access to the most compatible
browser for plugins. If you forget what browser you're in you can
always check under Help->About.and if it doesn't specifically say "64-
bit Edition" then it's not.

For most users who want access to Flash and other things, the 32-bit
browser is recommended.

Cant you just run the 32 bit version?

:bonk:

I changed all the shortcuts to 64 bit. I upgraded for a reason, and I am an anal retentive little sh*t at times :) Running 32 bit apps when 64 bit is available sucks. I agree though, cutting my nose off, yada yada yada.

Can't wait for 64bit CS4 :)

Gary.

what reason did you go for 64? RAM?

Various...

1: I design a lot of sites, and have my own servers - all of them running Windows Server 2003...Any server going forward will run Server 2008 (64 bit only), so I have installed as a client at home to allow me to get used to it.

2: I have 4GB ram, and I want to be able to use it all. 32bit can only recognise whats left after other devices memory is taken into account. Not sure exactly what the problem is, but I know Vista 32bit for example peaks at about 3.2gb usage. It reports 4gb if you have it installed, but trust me, almost a GB is being wasted.

3: Reading various reviews, and tech reports, this (server 2008) is VISTA done right. None of the bugs, none of the problems and its very stable. Also, it is a million times faster, I really do mean it.

4: 64 bit is the future, why wait? :)

Gary.
EDIT - sorry, yes RAM, didnt realise you knew.

Also, it has the Vista user experience enabled, so looks and feels identical to Vista.

>>4: 64 bit is the future, why wait?

64 bit is the past - the DEC Alpha was 64 Bit years ago - 1992

guys, you're ummm, like totally nerding out the dudes thread. :p

you seem to be getting there... I would hide the keyword block at the bottom a bit more, or make a feature of it as a tag box perhaps?

Words are nice an snappy as well. All you need to do is sort out the other pages now. short, snappy easy to read sentences are the key.

I am not sure about your use of the horizontal lines under each bullet point, for example on the schools page. They get in the way of the flow of the text.

B.

The latest logo is not going it for me to be honest. I am from the web 2.0 school of thought recently, I like the fresh popping logos of things like Flickr or Youtube etc. Not suitable for a tog site really, or at least, not a wedding one.

Gary.

I think

M Fry
Director

is unfriendly.

I don't really care what title you give yourself. I might be interested in your first name...

B Farrell
CEO

(if you see what I mean?)

take the pic of the girl off the page

lose the director tag and put your full name

lose all the writing thats below the password box

take the password bit out and give it its own section

take out the bullit points and just have an opening paragraph

keep the page clutter free , you just want a short intro thats it and nothing else

maybe a pic of your studio or of youself

your front page is what gives the impressions out , its the first thing that people see
