I bought a Meike grip for my Sony 580 last year- worked well and nothing broke- I sold it a few weeks back for what I paid for it, I couldnt fault it

never mind the grips this topic is all about whether you shop at aldi lidl or tesco now :lol:

We shop at Morrisons, Tesco if we feel the need to be insulted. The staff in our local store are appalling!

I find the service on the cooked meats counter appalling in them all
they are either cleaning or gossiping more often gossiping and I get peed off waiting for them so just walk off
On a more interesting note my meike grip is looking and working great

Well the grip I ordered on Sunday has been dispatched according to its eBay status, just waiting now for RM to do its worst :)

Had a YXTM grip on my 400D (now owned by my daughter) and I got a Mieke for the 40D. Both work exceedingly well. I compared the Mieke grip to a genuine canon one owned by a camera club collegeue, and they are identical, right down to the tiny screws in the battery cover etc.

I since bought a YXTM for a mate's 20D and it's doing great, too. I nver paid more than £25 for a grip.

As for "Why try and save money when you spent £X000 on a camera?"...well, I didn't. I bought the cameras cheap, too...I suppose someone who spent £1000 on a 7D might have spent as much as they can afford, and can't get the rest of the £200 needed for a genuine grip.

Oh, and Aldi's range of foods is obviously not as big as Te£co, but they have pretty much everything that we need. You just need to decode their product names:

Titan = Mars
Racer = Snickers (Used to be Marathon...geddit?)
etc...

They even sell decent beers now at about £1.50 for a bottle of Hobgoblin...only time that is £1.50 at Te£co is when it's on offer.

I notice MBP have some genuine used ones at not alot of money for the 40d
bit late now
Is yours going to be a meike one, add didn't say on ebay

Yet another vote for Meike battery grips

I've had two, one on my 30D (which stayed on it when I sold it) and another on one of my 50D's, with a genuine Canon grip on my other 50D

Cant fault the Meike grips at all. As others have said, the build quality is identical to the Canon grip. Oh, and another vote for the Duracell batteries, I bought eight from an ebay seller for just over £12 each

That may be on the older lower spec cameras, but I doubt that's the case when you get to the magnesium alloy chassis models (xD cameras) as the OEM grips have magnesium alloy chassis too. As I've pointed out above, the Meike grip is certainly not identical on the 5D2 or, apparently, the 60D (according to the link I posted). I suspect the 7D is different too. Again, whether the difference is worth it to you is a different matter.

I did look at the MBP ones and ummed and arred, finally just ordered this one.

Is it a Meike? I have no idea, I simply followed your link

Nice to hear Good things about the Meike grip. Might pick one up for my 60D :)

The add on ebay for My 7d one was the same company as the link I gave you and that didn't state the make either
But a Meike one turned up and it is Very good so hopefully your will be a Meike one too

Not if I could, by reasonable means, afford a genuine one. I have a genuine grip for my 500D and for my 7D I know the BG-E7 uses a magnesium alloy shell similar to the 7D, and presumably has an equal level of weather sealing which makes it worth it for peace of mind if nothing else. I would have probably bought a 3rd party grip for my 500D but managed to get a very good deal on a new one.

Well, the grip turned up today - great service it has to be said.... and it's a Meike grip :)

First impressions having never had a gripped camera are, what a whopper! It certainly bigs up ya camera man

I like it, I think it will fit nicely in with what I want, although I definitely need a new tripod and monopod now to help

Thanks for the pointer tho, pleased with this!

No problem glad your pleased with it
Nice box too

I had a genuine on my 500D and a protek on the 450D (both BG-E5) and the quality is miles better on the genuine grip.

Gaps between the edge of the rubber grip and the plastic molding not like the canon grip
The rubber wore quite quickly on the non genuine grip
The parts of the rubber that got no contact went harder and shiney and less grippy.

But the main problem was that with the non genuine grip switched on the buttons that the grip duplicates so the dial near the shutter focus point and other buttons etc wouldnt work, you had to switch the grip off so you could use the camera in landscape mode. the canon grip I could use all buttons without switching the grip off.

I would never buy a non genuine grip again, I did actually replace the non genuine grip with a canon grip after 6 months it was that bad.

well so far it looks like the Meike grip gets the thumbs up in the non gen grip battle
The issue with non gen grips seems to be the other makes

Is that listing on ebay from that famous Swansea in the US of A Dean lol

?? Mine arrived within 2days of ordering do I'm guessing not :-)

I clicked the contact details on the listing and it gives a company in the USA

I had a genuine one for the D200 and meike ones which fit the D300 & D700. To be honest they are not just as good but they still do the job. The price of the genuine ones is rather excessive.

I'd probably get a copy first, considering the usually massive price difference, if I used it a lot then I'd consider paying the extra for the genuine.

Would I buy a non gen battery grip?

No I wouldn't, but obviously many would, so not an issue.

However I have to ask why someone would spend a thousand quid on a camera and then try to save a few quid by buying a 30 quid battery grip. Beats me and seems totally illogical?

I don't see what is illogical about it, I bought a Meike grip for my D700 as I knew from using grips on previous cameras I'm not a fan of them so it would only get occasional use for the higher frame rate. The price difference is substantially more than 'a few quid', the official grip was around £250 when I bought the Meike grip for £40 and as people had said here, the third party grip works fine - screws onto the camera with no rattling, the buttons work fine and it correctly enables the higher framerate so I need nothing more from it.

Paying several hundred pounds more for something I am going to use occasionally which offers no benefit is the illogical option to me. If I do have a turnaround and start using the grip extensively and find the third party grip chronically unreliable then I may change my mind.
