My MacBook Pro supports the latest 802.11n protocols for wireless networking.

I wonder if anyone has upgrade to the newer "high speed" spec and what results have the achieved. Do yo get the 300mbs speed rather than the 54mbs of old?

Also what modem/router are you using. I'm looking at the Linksys WAG160n. I know Apple produce their Airport Extreme, buts it is about £50 more expensive. OK it does have wireless printer options, but the printer is only 5M from the computer and an active USB extension has taken care of that.

Thanks

Can't advise you on speeds etc, but I believe 'N' is still in the draft stage and as such the standard has not been fully defined, it would be well worth investigating the compatability between your Mac and the Linksys otherwise you may find the two 'N's' do not talk to each other and you only get 'G' speeds.

I get 270M with mine upstairs from the router (Belkin) and about 7-10 metres away needs a little tweaking to get there but quite consistent now it's all configured.

As PPP said, 802.11 N is not yet a standard so things may yet be changed regarding how it works. Afaik it is due to become a standard at some point this year but who knows what the IEEE have planned.
Unless you really need 802.11 N, I would stick to 802.11 G for now as that is standardised and unless you are transferring lots of large files to and from your laptop it will do the job fine.

There was an article in PC Pro suggesting that network cards and routers being of the same brand improves connection speed. Not sure if it would justify an extra £50 but I thought it might be useful to know.
