Wireless Access Point question

Yes
Our eldest is off to Uni shortly and as yet the halls don't have wireless connection. He has been told that he needs a wireless access point rather than a router (the latter is against the T&C's apparently).

I asked at our local computer shop and they sold us a Range Extender which they said would be connected by ethernet cable into the wall and therefore he could use his wireless devices in his room.

Does anyone have any advice as to whether I was sold the right thing? When I've looked at the spec since getting home it seems to receive a wireless signal and connect wired to a device rather than the other way round. I may have worked in IT since Babbage was a lad but networking isn't something I've had any direct involvement with.

or a TL-WA801ND if you want 300mbps.

(andy - do you have one of those nanos? whats the range like? moved into a lead lined house and need another ap for upstairs..)

whatever you chose make sure you have the option to disable dhcp and/or relay the requests. i dont think the techs would appreciate your AP trying to service the rest of the LAN (although i have heard they will disable your port if anything like that happens).

if youre still unsure it might be worth a chat with the techs and see if they have a recommended make/model.

Yes, I do, not tried the range though (unless you class "from the bed to the desk in a hotel room" as a range test :D)

My guess is that it won't be great.

Thanks for the replies guys even the 2am one

Neil, I've taken your advice and phoned their techies who definitely confirmed I had been sold the wrong box. Off to swap it for the 801 although they did say I could use a router as long as I disable DHCP as you pointed out.

Great stuff. Glad you're on the right track :)

Thought I'd follow up on this. I bought a TP-Link TL-WR841N in the end which we installed on Saturday when we took our son to Uni digs. It was easy enough to turn DHCP off although we had some difficulties setting devices up on their network (nothing to do with the router). Called their techy helpline who were brilliant. Job done.

Thanks for the above advice guys.
