As a project i want to revert one of my old laptops back to Win 98, so would be from Win XP to Win 98, I would like mto do this myself. Can anyone give me some advise on how to do this, or perhaps direct me to a tutorial.

thanks..

theres no downgrade path so it would be a simple format and install 98. assuming you can find all of the relevant hardware drivers, which would be a complete nightmare.

is there a specific point to the 98 install?

The only reason i wish to use win 98 is that i have an old excellent epson scanner which scans 2x2 , 3x3 and larger negs and glass negs, i have been unable to find drivers to use the old scanner with Win XP,
when i used the scanner yrs ago on the win 98 it was perfect. The old laptop has no other usage really. its purly for the usage of the scanner.

if it were me I wouldn't waste my time for a legacy piece of hardware. there should be plenty of newer scanners capable of the same thing.

have you checked to see if you have (or they are available to download) the w98 drivers for the rest of the hardware in the laptop?

If you need to get the scanner running badly and it's usb, you might want to consider giving virtual box a go: install windows 98 as a virtual machine - you shouldn't need any drivers for the OS to be functional, install the scanner software and see if the scanner connects by plugging the USB cable in the host computer.

I've had very mixed results running legacy hardware like this. Sometimes it works, sometimes it seems to work but doesn't or is flaky (ie keeps disconnecting) or just won't work at all.

If it does work you can probably keep it limping along indefinitely though.

There are loads of tutorials online it should only take a couple of hours get working.

Thats the problem there isn't, almost all of them will scan 35mm and like negs, this encludes my V500. But has no pockets or width in the light box to cover the 1960s 2" X 2" or indeed the old glass negs.
I have all the original software and drivers for the old Epson scanner, but cannot find drivers for above win 98..
I have quite a few hundred negs to scan and my modern V500 is not up to the job with the various sizes.

Thanks, food for thought as they say.

Have you tried Vuescan?? Free download to see if it works with your scanner.

After a couple of years of inactivity I found my Nikon scanner drivers would not work on W7 - Vuescan worked beautifully.

Is it a parallel port scanner? You might have trouble with any of the alternatives suggested such as VMs as the traditional way to talk down the parallel port was direct hardware IO to the parallel port controller chip. This is not possible in any NT kernel operating system as doing so generates in IOPL fault and does not do the requested operation, so it's entirely possible that the driver running on 98 in a VM won't work either as the direct IO in the VM may not get properly reflected back through the host OS.

arad is the person that knows about virtualisation on here though (I just complain about it breaking stuff).

Most software written for Windows 98 would work on Windows XP. Not all, but most of them would still work. Try installing your Epson scanner software on your Windows XP then...

Go to the Epson scanner icon, the icon you would usually click on to start the software, what you need to try doing is to right-click on the icon to bring up a sub menu, click on 'Properties' to open the Properties box. Look for the 'Compatibility' tab (usully the 3rd tab) and click on it. then under the 'Compatibility mode', but a tick in the box where it says 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' and then below that pull down the menu, select Window 98 / Windows Me'

This should be the first option to try before you think about installing Windows 98 as most of the times, this compatibility mode would sometimes fix the problems.

Unless you already tried it and it fails, I would suggest you try it first just in case.

I've been using Windows 98 for 15 years, it never failed me, just slow for modern technology, and I've now got a Windows XP, most of my software were for Win 98, and most of them are working fine on the XP, some of them had to have the compatibility mode turned on.

I've just had a skim through but can't see which model of printer it is that you are trying to get installed. Do you have a model number of your scanner so we could perhaps help out further? Knowing if it is a USB or a Parallel connection would be useful too :)

Have only just returned to this subject, so sorry for the delay in replying, and thanks for the replies.

The Scanner which i want to use with win98 is Epson Perfection 1200 which includes an 8" x 10" scan light, its all like new condition. This was a little beauty in scanning everything. especially negitives of all sizes, i tired to dowload drivers for win xp, but still could not get the epson software to work with winxp. As i have a few old laptops lieing around i thought i might just go backwards with one of them and load it win98, which in turn should work with the Epson scanner software.

I am currently working with a Epson V500, which is ok, but cannot scan the sized negitives i have..

I will try some of the advise above..

Sorry for the late reply, I've just found this article regarding installing your 1200 on Windows 7 in XP compatibility mode, so surely it would run in XP itself :) Just out of interest, are you running any Service Packs on your XP install?

I've also found this little page that may be of some use, although i'm assuming that you've probably got all this software already. I'm assuming Copy Factory is the Epson scanning software? There are also a couple of software updates in there for Copy Factory so perhaps one of those might help. Just an idea :)

edit..
haaa it's already been posted

maybe it's the twain driver thats having trouble i know i used to get some sort of conflict when i used xp with the 2450 i think completely removing the twain drivers and re installing them used to sort it out
