Windows 10 upgrade- avoid?

Keep getting pestered to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Will I regret it if I do? Anyone had experience of files going missing etc?
 
I have upgraded four PCs in our house to Windows 10 from Windows 7 without problem. I also installed a new copy of Windows 10 Professional on a server I built so I could use Hyper-V & run guest operating systems. The Windows 10 user interface takes a little getting used to but we have not lost any data. (I backed up the PCs before the upgrade just in case). My antivirus software stopped working until I installed the latest version but that was the only issue I had.

Like most OS upgrades, drivers can be an issue for older unsupported devices such as printers, scanners etc. It is worth checking for this before you proceed for any devices that are critical to you. I have an old Minolta SCSI film scanner that is unsupported on Windows 7 so I keep an old stand-alone XP DELL laptop & docking station for that.

I was a big fan of Windows 7, I disliked Windows 8, I am now happy with Windows 10. my non-techy wife coped moving from Windows 7 to 10 on her laptop too.

I did an upgrade from win 7 64bit a couple of times and had lots of issues with freezes and crashes. But I ended up doing a clean install and it's been rock solid ever since and I wouldn't go back now.
 
No problems here and I like it more than 7 :)
 
I upgraded my netbook and had no end of bother, culminating in losing all my progammes because I had to do a factory reset.

Not best pleased!
 
Upgrade to it (back up important things first), if you hate it roll back to the previous OS. By doing so you've secured your free version so in the future you can upgrade again or install a fresh copy and you'll be licensed.

Can't you just reinstall them?

Anyway, I updated my dual boot iMac to W10 and it seemed very nice and worked perfectly (for Windows) but I then the computer to my dad so never really stress tested it.

But still, I saw enough of it to say that when I get around to installing Windows on my new iMac I won't hesitate to use W10.

Oh, I did all that but I was just saying that if things go really wrong, it is not a case of having the option to revert to Win7 etc.
 
No, and one thing to bear in mind is that, as far as I can tell, unless you have a retail version of W10 when you upgrade you can't take your windows licence with you so if you own a Dell and decide to build yourself a new computer (for example) you will have to buy a new licence, W10 gets locked to the computer it is installed on (much like Mac).

Unfortunately my problem was lack of Windows 10 drivers for my SCSI cards, it was simpler & cheaper to keep the old XP system rather than trying to buy a low profile PCI/E SCSI card that had Windows 10 support. Also SCSI cables are pricey and a new card would need a new cable .....
SCSI is 'old' tech these days, SAS & SATA rule!

I had Windows 7 on my PC, which had problems with losing USB ports and crashing if left completely idle. Windows 10 has cured both problems, so happy with it.
 
My old machine would not run windows 10, so I rolled back to windows 7 and it runs great just like it had done for years.

That was always the case with OEM installs - the license travels with the machine, and not the owner.

I would regret it if I bowed to pressure from Microsoft.

If they keep pestering me, I'll tell them I've made up my mind, I've decided to stop using PC and buy an Apple Mac.

I have a right to decide for myself if I want to upgrade or not, same as I have a right if I want to decide to upgrade my vacuum cleaner or not.

My advice to you is: If you upgrade, it must be of your own choice by your own free will.

You would spend £1k+ just to spite Microsoft? I can't imagine they would be that bothered to be frank.

To the OP, the vast majority of people who upgrade to Windows 10 do so without a hitch.
I am sure a few people have some issues but that is the case with everything in life.

My desktop upgraded fine, took a few hours but just left it to do its thing and it worked fine.

Prefer W10 but that's personal preference.
 
I upgraded recently from Windows 7, and everything seems to be OK at the moment, in fact the machine seems a bit quicker if anything. The upgrade took a while though, around three hours in total I think.
 
I finally upgraded my Samsung laptop from 7 to 10. Everything works perfectly, slightly faster startup and shutdown. My old HP deskjet F2180 works fine as does all my software including my copy of Microsoft Money 99 !

It do not have to be Apple. There's always the option of Linux.

The point is if a company is pushy, then I have the right to shop somewhere else.

Of course, it may be peanuts to Microsoft, it may hardly put a dent in their accounts, and they don't give a damn how I feel, but as far as I know, there is no law saying I must have Windows 10, so I'll stick with my Windows 7 until it stopped working.

I would rather install Windows 10 by my own choice, not because Microsoft is pushy. If I feel like saying "Alright! Alright! I've installed Windows 10. Are you happy now Mr Gates?" then I would regret it.

I don't care if Windows 10 work or does not work on my machine, it is not a case of would I regret it if I installed Windows 10. It is not a case of doing it to spite Microsoft, because it is a case of knowing my rights as a customer.

I was worried that my MS Office 2000 suite would not open, but it seems to like that as well thank goodness!
We are back in the dark ages aren't we!!

My Microsoft Office '97 still works on Windows 7.
 
Wife's laptop upgraded with no problems and she still runs office 97!
 
Why do people still think that Bill Gates has anything to do with Microsoft anymore?
 
You should probably do it as 7 is now obsolete and software may stop being compatible in the next few years. 8 and 10 are daft though, it was a big mistake to mix a tablet interface with desktop in my view. 10 is better than 8 but is still needlessly clunky
 
XP is unsupported OS now.

Soon so will Windows 7 be.

Upgrade - it's far better.

It's like someone saying you must have a free new car when yours go well but is 5 years old.

Unless they don't build them like they used to! I'd be reluctant to swap my still silky smooth 19 year old BMW for a new car...

Extended support for Windows 7 lasts until January 2020.
Windows 10 in my view is malware.

My desktop is running w10 but 95% of the time I'm using Linux anyway. Booting into Windows generally leads to shouting and sweariness when I invariably find my boot partition has (once again) been overwritten and various Lenovo and NVidia skunkware packages are installed without my consent.

It sounds like you're making problems for yourself.
Windows 10 - to coin a phrase - "just works" for most people.

If you don't like it use something else?
All these arguments against it seem much the same as when XP came in and the diehards were going to stick with Windows 98 for evah because Micro$oft are evil and XP spies on you etc etc.

Don't know if you still can but I downloaded W10 as an ISO file which I presume could be used later.

MS should just do an Apple.

Slowly reduce the functionality of their existing OS while charging for an upgrade to the next, then everyone will love them.

All this giving away free upgrades is just ridiculous.

remember its only temporary free for existing MS users with qualifying product.

its soon to be an estimated £100 upgrade.

"MS tried to force me into having a free upgrade! Utter tosh, malware! blah blah blah, and now that I want it, they're demanding money! OUTRAGE!"
