Win 10

Went really good for me and i have put it on a few PC's now (Father in law, nephew and couple mates). Some of the machines were older and 2 were newer. Plus i put it on my wifes laptop and an ITX build i did and they do seem snappier. Much more responsive!

horse and cart worked.
And they are still going strong 100 odd years later.
Will we be saying the same for windows ( whatever edition? )
:D

Worried about doing a restore to win 8.1,i don,t want to have to reinstall all my progs.

I'm having mixed feelings - seem to be fire-fighting with workarounds for stuff that should work OK. Latest issue is the cursor keeps getting frozen, and I have to ctl-alt-del and then cancel to get it mobile again. I suspect there's an issue with the Dell trackpad driver, because that's disappeared from the taskbar and I can no longer use gestures/2 finger scrolling.

Have you been to the Dell Support page to see if there are any driver updates available?

My Dell laptop has had two Bios updates in the last three months............runs like a John Forrest watch now :)

I would doubt the same horse was still going strong after 100 years ;).

But they are still in use :D
You have heard the expression that a cowboy will ride a horse until it drops, an Indian will then get on that horse and ride it another 100 miles.
I am that Indian

:D

As i am still thinking about going back to win 8.1 i thought i need to back up to my spare 1TB usb drive that has been sitting in the drawer for ages.
Plugged it into the wall socket & connected the usb to the pc,but it does not show up no matter what i try.
I had the drive up to my ear the next time i tried to re power it but it is just making a weird whirring noise & won,t boot up,so i think it is goosed.
What i have done is on my homegroup i made a folder on my wife,s pc & backed up a lot of files & programs in it,will this work ok if i need them?.

And yet I am getting increasingly urgent messages from Microsoft offering me W 10 and even "threatening" to install it for me, all I have to do is click "here"
From the outset, when the first little offer message appeared, I have become increasingly sceptical due to that and what I have read on TP and elsewhere.
No thanks Bill, you can keep it!

Ask me again in 5 years when W7 is no longer supported,
and all the apparent issues have been ironed out of 10

Well my upgrade to win 10 went fine & so far it is all running smoothly.:)

As i am still thinking about going back to win 8.1

?

fyi copying your programs to a drive wont mean they work if you copy them back again. they need to be reinstalled if you are not going to follow the revert process.

You could try taking the actual hard drive out of the external gubbins and put it in a USB caddy.

Sometimes it's the controller that goes wrong and disc is OK.

Check Youtube for a video on how to do it (it's easy!) ... something like this...

That looks easy enough but i really don,t want to open up my pc to try & install it.:)

I opened the drive up & found all the little bits inside,so it is in the bin,job done.:D

I did revert my laptop from Beta W10 last January, all the programs were still there.
The only issue was a wifi driver I'd been having issues with needed manually reverting as I'd tried some alternatives.

I just reverted back to win 8.1 & all my programs are still there.

I recently installed Win10, 2 things I would like to know, 1 How do you remove programs, also my screen resolution keeps changing every time I boot, anybody help on this.

settings -> system -> apps and features. click app, press remove. or type control panel in to the search bar to launch the old style control panel and use programs and features like normal.

second issue sounds like graphics drivers, checked for an update from your hardware vendor?

So why? If you had no problems?
I just feel happier with 8.1,maybe next year at some point i might have another try with it,i don,t know.:)

How do you remove programs ....
Which in particular. Do you mean some of the bundled Windows apps?

My upgrade seems to be working fine. First, Microsoft's compatibilty check reported that all harware, apps & drivers would be good. Can't tell the difference, really.

A few minutes work tidying up the start menu etc ...

Yes all the dross that Win 10 comes with, like Cortana, Edge, Store, etc.

It seems lots of people who are having problems with Windows 10 are using Dell computers. I know Dell are not the best regarding updating drivers for older model of computers but it is becoming a bit of a trend this Dell windows 10 issues.

Nice to know, I have a Dell Vostro

I have two Dell PC's and a laptop, all upgraded perfectly. I think it's just lots of folk own Dell computers

My 'Insider' W10 PC was working well until the latest updates and now it can't see the web site or contents of shared folders on my non-Windows servers. It's fine accessing my WHS2011 server.
I allowed the PC under the TV to upgrade from W7HP to W10 and that's exactly the same.
My W7 & W8.1 PCs can see the web sites and contents of the shared folders on all servers.

Cortana & Edge I think are un-removable. CCleaner (free) helped me uninstall some of the others. I don't like imposed corporate clutter either.

CCleaner can be got here, without any sneaky adware, spyware etc ... https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
thanks for that link, will have a go, it would be nice if they let you choose what you wanted when you installed Win 10, most of the included programs I will never use, I personally would not even use windows if the people at Adobe got there act together and ported a Lnux version.

You are talking as Linux gives you that option. I know it does not.

I did manage to turn off cortana before win10 completely knackered my netbook!
