I'm using an all in one Dell 8.1 Windows (about 6 months old). I keep getting the pop up to install Windows 10. If I do is it,
1, Straight forward,
2, Will I have to put photoshop, lightroom, Steam, Nero and other programs back on,
3, Is it worth moving up to Windows 10?
It's usually easy (just click the pop up & wait while it downloads). Any installed software stays installed, and you can revert to 8.1 at any time during the first 28 days.
Is it worth it? Hard to say really - I have done it recently onto a new SSD, it *might* be just a little quicker than W8.1, but outside of that I am not aware of any benefits since 8.1 worked really well anyway.

The correct answers are:
1. yes
2. NO, the upgrade from 8.1 does not delete your programs or settings
3. Probably, win 10 has a better UI and feels faster in use than 8.1 on all the machines I've used it on.

Now I want it again![]()
I am still quite happy with XP and Win 7 with ALL updates turned off - yes that's right I NEVER update anything and now run virtually everything in VMs to protect against the odd attempt (if any) to hack my machine.
And now, apparently, Microsoft is using machines running Win 10 as servers to distribute all the updates they have.
So your PC could be used as part of a giant botnet with all the dangers that entails.
One researcher (Steve Gibson of www.grc.com) has described it as a "Flying turd of an operating system" and says he will never use it and I'm inclined to agree with him.
.
I'm running w10 on my development machine, since I just got a shiny new one so the first thing I did was to put a shiny new OS on it, and it was set to off by default.the distributed update delivery can be turned off or limited to machines on your local network for starters.
wasnt sure what it was by default, we have a GPO deploying WSUS settings so wasn't sure whether that switched it off.I'm running w10 on my development machine, since I just got a shiny new one so the first thing I did was to put a shiny new OS on it, and it was set to off by default.
good lord.

as for the running of xp and 7 with no updates. wont even comment on that.
im not going to waste my breath to be honest, and hope that most of the people reading the comment would have some common sense.Really? And you comment on so many things Neil..![]()
The fact you are steadfastly sticking to XP and basic 7 without updates tells a lot about your IT acumen.

last thing, symantec wouldn't be my choice for any advice.
petersmart, you appear to make me want to bang my head against a brick wall.
Unpatched VMs on an unpatched host - not going to afford you any kind of protection. There are plenty of ways to compromise a host operating sytsem from within a VM. Especially if the hypervisor is unpatched.
You'd be better off running tails on a disposable laptop if you want to be that paranoid and afford any real benefit from the hoops you're jumping through.

I was thinking exactly that its like turning the boiler up to full to heat the house instead of shutting the windows.
Do you have a burner smart phone as well so aliens cant track you?
Hope so! I downloaded W10 today (took less than an hour) and wrote the iso file to a dvd. A bit nervous about beginning ... tedious, really.... if i reverted back to win 8.1 would i be able to reinstall win 10 if i changed my mind.![]()
