I've been eyeing up a Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 for a while but I've decided not to bother at the moment. I don't think my ability is up to the layout and also don't think I can bring myself to pay so much at the moment.

I like to take my camera out walking trying to snap wildlife and have up to now been using a Nikkor 70-300 VR lens and thought it might be a better idea for now to get some more range.

So now I'm looking at a 120-400 f5.6 OS Sigma, I know I'm going to miss the extra stops of the f2.8 but I would need to add a 2xTC to get the same length there by reducing it down to f5.6 and reducing the sharpness a touch.

So after all my waffle, would I regret the Sigma. I think it should be enough to tide me over for a couple of years until my ability catches up with my kit. What ya think ?

Cheers.

I had the 70-300 VR Nikon and thought it was a very good lens. But then I got the 70-200VR and you really see the difference and I often shoot at f4. It is a very good lens.

why not go for the 150-500mm os.

It's marginally heavier and larger making a little more unwieldy so I thought the 400 would be the better option for a lens to take out walking. Also the slightly smaller apature put me off a little. Both seem to get pretty decent reviews however.

I have the 120-400 and i use it as a walk about lens, i've looked into lenses offering more distance but as you have already stated, size and weight start to become an issue. So all in all the sigma's a good lens and it'll certainly do me until my ability justifies me spending a lot of money on some serious canon glass, so in essnce no, i don't think you would regret buying the siggy.

Depends if you're 'snapping' wildlife or aiming to take good photos...if you see what I mean, so focal length is they key me thinks. The Sigma 150-500 and 50-500 lens can do this a lot better than a Nikon 70-300....arguably a Nikon 80-400 can do it even better but it has reasonably slow autofocus (probably on a par with the Sigma lenses). Maybe take yourself into Jessops, LCE, etc. and try them all side by side for AF as well as weight, balance, etc..

Buy the sigma, lose 50% on it when you decide you're not happy with it

Buy a S/H 70-200 VR for around £900-£1000 and lose nothing on it should you decide you're not using it enough

A D7000 with a 70-200VR 1.4TC and a big crop will still be better than the sigma IMO
