Hi folks.

Camera set up wise I have 2 Canon 40d's and a 5D Mk2.

I also own a Sigma 10-20mm lens.

After reading something a while ago about some EF-S lenses damaging the mirrors in FF cameras, I've always kept the 10-20 on the 40d rather than the 5Dmk2.

However, I have just been reading something else that says this lens WONT damage the mirror as it is ONLY Canon EF-S mounted lenses that do this and the 10-20 lens will work - albeit with a little vignetting up until about 16mm, but fine after that to 20mm.

So, I have two questions ....

1. Has anyone tried a 10-20mm on a 5dMk2 and is it ok ?
2. What (Similar priced) alternatives do I have if not?

I should also add that my widest lens on the 5dmk2 is currently the 24-105 f4L. I also own a Tamron SP AF 17-50 xr di ii ld lens but have never had this on the 5dmk2 either .... could I ?

Thanks in advance.
Anth

Your Sigma should be okay on your 5D2, I had a Canon 40D but had the EFS 10-22 which is not compatible with the 5D2, the Sigma is designed as a full frame lens. I now have the 17-40L as I had the EFS lens.

No it isn't the Sigma is designed for crop sensors

Thanks ChrisH and f/2.8 ...... the Sigma is designed as an APS-C lens, but I have heard that it will work on FF - with some vignetting. Just wondered if anyone had encountered this.

Also, whats the 17-40L like ? Looks nice!!

17-40L in my experience is a very sharp lens with fantastic colour rendition. I have to say thought that the 17-22 EFS was very crisp all through the range too.

Yes the Sigma will cause some vignetting but its okay if you can live with it.

If you can afford the 17-40L you'd love it although I think the 16-35L is supposed to be a tad better but it is significantly more expensive.

I would double check but by looking at the Sigma website if a lens has DC it's designed for crop sensor camera's and if it says DG it's designed for full frame bodies. http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/image/notation.gif

I would contact Sigma UK and clarify before trailing it to save an expensive mistake.

Cheers Ian - you are correct in that dc=crop and dg=ff.
I have however also read that it will work without damaging the mirror and the rear mounts don't go as far as the ef-s (which apparently dont fit ff anyway).

As I have a Sigma 10-20 and the Tamron 17-50, I might sell both of these and use the funds to invest in the 17-40L .... need to think about this one!!

Interesting .... So this is my Tamron.

I've never tried attaching it to the 5dmk2 as I always presumed it wouldn't work ..... Are you now tellning me it will Chris ???

Exciting times!

Turns out your Tamron has an ef-s mount so your no better off. Seriously think of upgrading to the 17-40L it's compatible with all Canon ef bodies.

It does sound like you would benefit most from getting the 17-40mm. Although it appears the Sigma will function fine from roughly 17mm onwards - have you tried that yet?

I haven't tried that as yet Richard .... I will though! Although I can feel the lure of the 17-40 L !!!

Not surprising, I expect with the sale of the 17-50 and the 10-20 you will easily have enough money for it.
