I have tried two different USB port plug in WIFI connect units by different makes and initially they worked fine. However given 2/3 months use they started to fail in part. I normally get a download speed of about 15.50/15.80 MBPS but this kept dropping drastically to about 5/6MBPS. I kept trying to correct by resetting and also disconnecting via removing the USB units but the same thing keeps happening. Luckily I still kept and internal card (Edimax) and the 2 aerials that came with it. So ran the program disc and put in to router password and at the moment things are going ok with a signal strength of around 78%. OK not 100% but this computer is in another room from the router so I didn't expect a perfect signal strength but at lest this EDIMAX does let one know which is more than the USB plugin units do, and also frees up a USB port at the same time. So fingers crossed the problem of half intermittent download speed gone

Is it not possible to hard wire the computer to the router? I had a poor connection issue due to the router being in a different room and ended up pulling up floorboards and running a wire. Hassle at the time but now lightning quick!

Where I use to live it was hard wired but it would be a bit of a job here and easier to take the WIFI route . What did increase the download speed believe it or not was putting the Router straight onto BT master socket with no joints first. In other words from outside straight to the master socket which contains the data as well as line ports

. Before the telephone line went into an internal junction box and then to the Main socket the other side of our lounge, only about 8/10 foot away moving the main Tele socket and making it the first connection inside the house actuially increased the download speed by about 6 mbps. Yes I know it is hard to believe but every BT connection the internet signal goes through reduces the strength considerably. On right move the estimated download speed for the area was only 9mbps , so to get between 15 and 16 mbps was a bonus and fast enough for my needs. Where I used to live I was lucky to get even 2mbps download due to line distance from exchange, so to now get this speed is amazing

Have to tried a power line home plug?

Search for updted drivers for the device, you might find the symptoms are like a known issue already fixed.
I don't like being directly connected to the router because twice now lightning has tickled things by the phone lines. With good signal strength there isn't much speed penalty.

Sorry but cable will always outperform even the fastest wifi, especially for sustained transfer.

If the speed is just randomly dropping for no apparent reason I'd put money on some form of interference. Or maybe the USB ports are underpowered.

Kev no I have not and got things sorted now I, thanks for the suggestion i will bear it in mind hope
4WD I have had lighting hit the overhear telephone where i used to livein but luckily I had an anti surge unit with its own power supply so got away with it like in this link

Neil don't think interference is the problem ,may be wrong, or the USB is under powered as it is built into the motherboad, and the computer has a 750w power unit if that makes any difference. The device manager is not showing up any USB port problems either.
I strongly suspect the internet USB dongles just arn't up to the task
See I have learn't one technical term "Dongle":)
