Why restrict access to profile?

Why do people feel the need to pry into others lives.
I could tell a whole pack of lies in my profile, what difference would it make.
It's down to sheer nosiness, I don't go round handing out bits of paper at meetings I attend with my life history
if you want to know something PM me if I might tell you, but I can't see what difference someone
being able to see what is or isn't in another's profile makes any difference to what you think of their
photography, perhaps someone could explain that ?
And yet your profile is open for all to see

I'm guessing that means you're not paranoid, I'm also guessing that as we know a little about you, you're less likely to start name calling and being a general nob.

It seems there are people who don't understand the 'issue' and are guessing miles wide of the mark.

If you read some people's posts, you can see the pattern, behave like a nob = hide all personal details ;)

Only to Members, and tell me, what have you learnt from looking at, very little I guess

because right to privacy?

Privacy? Privacy? I am not going to deny anyone that
most important right, for sure!

You have no name, no face, but I know you are using
Sony gear, from London and you possibly like bananas
— this is avatar speculative.

In you case for ex., there is nothing more I need to know,

…except if you really dig bananas, eventually! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::wacky:

I agree with Daniel on this. There is little or no reason to be anonymous online anymore. Especially on forums like this one. I'm not sure its creepy though but the majority of people who maintain a clock to hide their identities just seem to wish to insult, troll and cause trouble. On a purely personal note I'm far less likely to trust what anyone has to say without atleast a real name on their profile

I have ginger hair and at one point during university I lost a bet and had to dye it green, and someone pointed out as it was growing out that my hair was the colour of a crocodile but I had orange roots. Not once did they realise that my hair finally really did look like carrot tops.
It all makes sense now :D:D:D

Someone will need to explain to me why believing I'm a 60 year old Northern bloke with a liking for whippets, or a 30 year old lass from the West Country with a penchant for scrumpy, would make any difference to anyone.

So,,,,,,,,,,,,,,which are you then?

I've nowt to hide, nothing is marked private in my profile and I have never signed in as 'anonymous'
I'm happy with what I have done with my life and will continue to be (I hope)

User name comes from my time as a DCSL in Scouting, Won-Tolla is a character from Jungle Book, an old respected wolf that was welcome in any pack. Kinda describes what I did, visiting all the Cub Scout packs in my district.

I find this post curious, TBH QC I'm guessing is Quebec, ( which would tie in with the French / Canadian comments) your real name is not on your profile.
Curious? Why that?
Kodiak Qc because the name Kodiak was already
taken by a long time inactive member; so I had to
add something… and yes, it means Québec.
Yep, leave the bullying to us
Yeah, right.

Your wife says she calls you something different ;) ;)
She called me all sorts,
As do most people, but as long as they don't call me "Late for dinner" who cares? :D

Green Liquorice? Yuk.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

I recognize …

My web site is there and in my website there
is even my telephone number and a lot more.

Get my drift?

But its not on the forum, nor is a link to your website in your signature.
There is a lot of information to be gained about most people if you can be arsed to search for it.
Especially those with websites.
So if you want to know about people search for it, not post an "anonymous" thread about it

IT WAS THERE!

Then I got tons of junk mail with the reference to TP.
When I asked why the reference, I was told:

IS YOUR EMAIL IN YOUR SIGNATURE?

If someone really wanted to they can easily find out my name its not hard ;)

My avatar tells plenty about me. I do like bananas but I like eating in general.
I like travelling and going out, and I do wear hats (mainly keep the sun from giving me a headache).
if any one got "1+1=10" joke on my avatar's shirt (along with my profile name) should be able to easily tell what kind of work I do for a living.

My avatar is also brown for a reason ;) I am not just permanently tanned :P

I don't have any more information on my profile because I am just lazy to fill out sign up forms. So I probably just filled the minimum needed to sign up.

Like I said, the available info is very ok with me. Be lazy!

In my case 'Snapshot' was my CB handle so it seemed natural to use it online. It was taken here so I used the alternative form with a zero.
My avatar is from my Lego Star Wars sequence and perhaps reflects my personality a bit.

What I don't understand is why people here use avatars that aren't their own creations. I can understand it on non-photographic fora but here?

Its too small to read well certainly for me :p

well it looked fine on gravatar when I made it like 4 years ago. You should fix the forum to give a bigger preview of my work of art that describes me so well :D :p

Exactly the point!

:tumbleweed:

There's a definite 'type' of person who insists on locking down their profile, I'm having difficulty understanding why this isn't obvious o_O

There is little or no reason to be anonymous online anymore.

That's naive given perfectly reasonable people who express perfectly reasonable views on-line are subject to death threats on a daily basis. Just because you've never received them, doesn't prevent them being real. Just because you've never sent any, doesn't prevent it being a real issue.

There are plenty of reasons for being anonymous on-line.

, I don't go round handing out bits of paper at meetings I attend with my life history
That's fair enough, but wouldn't you expect to know the names of the people at that meeting and them to know yours?

Except bizarrely...

The people with the most anonymous profiles are the ones with the most threatening behaviour.

Think of the biggest nobs you've encountered here, then check their profile.

I'm willing to bet you'll see what I mean.

From my very limited experience of knobs here (two of them) you are certainly correct. Mind you, my profile has b****r all information as far as I remember, but my handle will give my age away.

I started staying reasonably annonomous so that neither my mates (opposed to friends) or colleagues could track me down online and out me as a model railway enthusiast...I have then just kept the habit ever since....

Maybe if you're a drama queen with an overactive imagination. Those nasty death threats happen all the time. I can understand why people live in fear.....

Has your name too Spencer ;)

my profile is totally open and I have been accused of behaving like a k.......b, by the Mods, what can be worse than that ... I was told by one to stop posting rubbish, he was referring to my images, but looking at his I have nothing to fear, but I did stop posting ...... I have certainly nothing to hide and will certainly stand behind all I say

I'm with Tony on this. Privacy is important and not everybody who "hides" behind a veil does it for sinister reasons. In these days of political correctness and corporate ethical standards, it is necessary to keep private and corporate life separate.

You mean you get Death threats?

There's a big difference between an open profile with little info and a locked down profile without a name, avatar or any other detail relating to a real human being.

I like the anonymity of the internet. :) So much so, that when someone does use my real name occasionally online, because they may know me in the 'real world' or it is on a site where I have used my real name for some reason, it seems weird. I put as much information out as I'm comfortable with. If someone feels that is not enough information, and it somehow negates what I am posting, or have posted. Meh! Whatever.

I don't think I go round insulting, trolling or causing trouble, but if anyone ever thinks that of me, or anyone else, whether they are using their real name or we know everything about them, report it to a Moderator. I come to learn, be entertained and engaged in subjects that interest me. I like trying to help people, and sometimes make (imho anyway ;)) humorous comments. I don't feel anyone needs to know everything about me to do that. If anyone feels different, put me on your ignore list. :)

I believe you fall into the category of open, honest and opinionated.

And self confident enough to shoulder a description of knob and laugh it off. There's a big difference between you and the nobs who are the subject of this thread. :)

Yet one click in your signature reveals as much about you as clicking in mine does me....

If you see someone name as name + surname .... how do you know its real? could be just as fake as a made up silly name ?
