I currently use photobucket to up load photos for forums and such, and as a newbie round these parts I can't help noticing that many of you use Flickr. What are the advantages of using Flickr?

I use Flickr purely because at $20 a year it represents a great value additional backup medium for all my processed pics. I don't set any of my images to public though and upload at full resolution.

you really need to get yourself a flickr account!

Aside from being able to store photos on it, to link to elsewhere, it's a great way to learn from others, more than anything else. You can add other photographers on it, whose work you find inspirational, [and others can add you too]... then you can learn a thing or two from them, and vice versa. Always nice to see what other people are up to.

Joining flickr really helps motivate me sometimes to keep going.

Indeed! Flickr really is an excellent source for inspiration and if you need help there are plenty of groups that will do just that

Flickr is much more than an image hosting site.

It offers a flexible way of grouping and sharing your images in areas of particular relevance relating to the subjects you have captured.

You can place your shots and their locations on a global map, join and post your thoughts within groups specifically relevant to them, collate and share opinions of other members images and even develop your own applications suited to your needs using the Flickr API.

It's a complete social network that revolves around photography and image sharing.

Since you are interested enough in photography to be here on TP and have asked about Flickr, I'd recommend signing up - basic membership is free and I'm confident you'll appreciate it's value to the extend you'll quickly consider the benefits from subscribing for the modest annual fee. :)

And if you are with BT Broadband you get a free Flickr Pro account

Done! Now how do I make a link to the bottom of my posts like those above? :)

Plus you can join all those post-one-comment-on-five groups and get lots of "nice shot" comments and then you can feel all warm and fuzzy inside :shake:

This post got me thinking. How do people treat their Flickr - do many people upload ALL of your photo library and keep it as a backup (with the correct privacy settings) and then set some ones to public? Or do people only upload the ones they want people to see?

As well as what everyone else said - pictures look considerably better on flickr imo.

The smaller versions are sharpened after they are resized. Sometimes this does make the image look better, other times it exacerbates moire or introduces jaggies.

I signed up to Flickr after asking s similar question myself, it's been great so far
btw if you are uploading Full res images make sure you watermark them

:)

Only uploaded a few so far. How do you watermark an image?

Just testing my signature works.

I guess not :(

Nah! .... It's a strange thing with TP that only posts the sig once per page and only if you make a post of 500 words (or something like that) :D

If you look in your profile, you will see it there .. that's how I got the link to your Flickr  Nice firework shots BTW

They only allow one Glaswegian's signature per thread, so in this case.............

It's me

DOH!! .... Should have seen that! :bonk: Your right, you made it in post #15 ... no more Glaswegian sigs in this thread! .... Strange rules on TP .... :D

There's a lot of weird and wonderful ways on this forum. It's taking me some time to get to grips with them. Thanks for your help by the way. Much appreciated:thumbs:

You're welcome

Just a little update. I uploaded some of my photos and I'm now getting a kick out of total strangers viewing them. I didn't think anybody would view or even like them but it seems some do.:) I didn't think I'd get such a kick out of it but there you go.
