I need people's advice on a constant issue that myself and others in the building I work in every day face which often ends in near crashes.

https://www.google.com/maps/@51.5889356,-3.2039516,136m/data=!3m1!1e3

I work in the building in the very bottom right shown in the google maps link and the only way out is the junction in the middle of the screen. I turn left at the junction every day when I leave.

Now the problem we have is the people coming out of the industrial estate, directly opposite, turn right (the drivers right) so are cutting across the traffic.

Basically as soon as the traffic lights change to green they fly across and are 'competing' with me to join the same line of traffic.

My argument is as they are cutting across the traffic then surely it's my right of way and they should only turn when the turn is clear.

If I'm correct, they certainly disagree and shout, swear, beep the horn and the final straw for me tonight was at the next roundabout got out of his van to make his feelings known. I got out, as a precaution, and he started shouting that it was his right of way.

The question is therefore, have I totally misinterpreted the highway code or is it my right of way?

its clearly known that anyone driving a red bmw, white transit van, or a taxi has right of way in all circumstances

joking aside I think you are right, but in practice some people will be road captains regardless of what the highway code says

basically anyone entering a traffic stream yields to those already in it... i,.e. turning right into traffic, waiting at a roundabout etc.. (unless you are on the M8 in Glasgow = fair game for all, and who is going to bottle it first... last time i was there, in a hertz rentashed, played the game with £150K worth of lambo... no way way i going to let him in, (had already let two in - and i believe in the one-one approach) must have missed by a millimeter before the arrogant tosser got the message...

There is no such thing as right of way.

You have priority because the other driver is crossing the oncoming lane of traffic even if nothing is coming.

However beware. The other driver t****r may not think so and caution is better than a bump (which would probably get treated as a "knock for knock")

....is it worth it?

IIRC at a crossroads where there's a main road involved, the person turning right has the least priority. Because you're turning left, you have greater priority.

Today, whilst at a large roundabout that was traffic-controlled and had a slip lane for the motorway, I was almost in an accident. I was in the middle of three lanes. Lane 1 was to the motorway (first exit), Lane 2 was to motorway and 2nd exit. Lane 3 was for 2nd exit. Lights turn green and I accelerate. Retard in Lane 3 overtook and cut across me to get to the slip lane. Was obviously in the wrong lane and nearly caused a frikkin accident.

You could get in touch with the highways agency to reset the timing or get a filter fitted to the traffic lights.
They tend to be amenable to suggestions so that accidents can be avoided. I think they realise that some drivers are wallies.

Thanks everyone.

Tigger. the problem we have is our office is small and only has 2-3 cars leaving at anyone time whereas the industrial estate all kick out between 4:30 and 5 so there are dozens of cars pushing across. if we didn't stand our ground we would never get out.

just change your leaving time then - problem solved ;)

......or arrange for a few people to go straight over on bicycles (with a death wish!) :D

"Right of way" is what the person who has just collided with you is sure he had.

Simple answer...I bloody wish. :)
I have to leave at that time to pick my son up which is why it's so frustrating.

so leave 30 minutes earlier and go get a coffee en route

Mind and look for job vacancies whilst you're having the coffee:p

As for the question, the folk turning right should give way to you.

Best not to get into the mindset of "right of way", much better to be a defensive driver.

Clearly you should have priority - they effectively cross your path. But looking at the image - there are two lanes? surely it shouldn't be too difficult for the other car to go into the right lane unless the A468 is very busy. I am sure a similar situation arises when someone from your side wants to turn right and ends up in conflict with the opposite guy turning left...

.

Shouldnt be an issue - just start 30 mins earlier too - its only a small business with two or three cars worh of employees so they should be flexible enough to arrange that

Everyone knows that at knocking-off time all traffic laws are suspended

Everyone knows you have priority if:

You're in a hurry
You drive a bigger car
You drive a German car
You drive a bigger German car
You drive a white van
You drive a bigger white van
You drive a bigger German white van
You're in a rush
You've had a s*** day
You're 'ard!
Your dad is bigger than their dad
You have a bigger willy

Don't see where all the confusion lies tbh.

Get a rusty old heap, preferably a flat bed type thing, they'll think you're a "traveller" so you wont have insurance or a licence (MOT or Tax) you'll get right of way then.

A certain area where a mate lives, the biggest person has the right of way !

Buy a van. I didn't realise just how much simpler driving is until I got a van. You can just pull out in front of people, not indicate, other van drivers let you out, other car drivers let you out coz they know that you're going to pull out anyway. Thoroughly recommended :)

After having read this thread, surely I can't be the only one feeling like this . . . .
