WHich song always brings a lump to your throat?

Great kick-a$$ thread this, love it.

Two from me if I may. The first of which is simply choral work and orchestra at its very best. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing... well... just listen (especially to the section at 3:18)

Secondly is this superb piece from Gordon Giltrap, Dodo's Dream in which he plays I think it is 6 different tracks - wait for it - LIVE!!! He uses a Loop Station Recording machine to record and overlay track on track on track et al... all LIVE!! it is wonderful. Enjoy the magic!

Johnny Cash - Hurt

I much prefer the original Nine Inch Nails version :)

One song that really got me blubbing was 'Under the Bridge' by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I'd just read 'Scar Tissue' (the biography of Anthony Keidis, the singer) which explained the meaning behind the song. I was travelling to work when the song came on the radio, and cried most of the way to work

that link still isnt working but did a google - you are so right fantastic lyrics fantastic voice

How bizzare ?

It isn't working on here, but works fine when viewed on youtubes site... ?

Odder than washing your car on Sunday afternoon using sleeping water buffalo..

Another one from me, completely different this time, by a choir called Libera performing their version of "Sanctus"

for anyone stuggling to put clips in their posts:

1. Find the video on youtube
2. copy the numbers and letters at the end of the url (in the address bar at the top)
3. click on "post reply" in the thread (dont use the quick reply thing)
4. Click on the
youtube.gif
button (5 right from the picture one)
5. paste in the number/letter code thingy you copied from youtube
6. submit.

Au fond du Temple Saint - from the Pearl Fishers by Bizet

This is a little longer than some, but I do recommend it (try coming in at about 2:55 if you're not into opera that much). It can really lift the hairs on the back of your neck.

There are many versions on YouTube (try Roberto Alangna and Bryn Terfel for example) but this is the best version I have ever heard - quite startling!

Oops - got so carried away I didn't sign my name...

Anthony.

Luther VanDross...dance with my father again. heart of flaming stone not to get chocked with that one :'(

nothing else really gets to me, plenty of sad stuff around though...

This one doesn't just bring a lump to my throat, I weep uncontrollably every time I hear it. For that reason, I only listen to it when I'm alone. It is the most powerful lyric I've ever heard, without equal.

"When The Tigers Broke Free" (Pink Floyd)
It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'forty four.
When the forward commander
Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
And the Generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while.
And the Anzio bridgehead
Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.

And kind old King George
Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His Majesty signed
With his own rubber stamp.

It was dark all around.
There was frost in the ground
When the tigers broke free.
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company C.
They were all left behind,
Most of them dead,
The rest of them dying.
And that's how the High Command
Took my daddy from me.

The sarcasm and bitterness is overwhelming. When Roger Waters wrote this lyric his pen must have scorched the paper and moved graves deep in Hell. :'(

When I think about it theres loads of songs that affect me emotionally, but then I have been into music since about 1967!

Three wishes, Roger Waters

Saw GG live once and met him afterwards! had a chat and got his autograph!

When The Tigers Broke Free should have made it to the album, rather than just the wall movie.

I absolutely agree! :)

That song that the Canadian horse faced bint sang in Titanic. Brings a lump to my throat every time I hear it. Generally several lumps actually. Of diced carrot.

I think mines has to be camaflauge by ahhhhh can't remember who by:nuts: and not a dry eye in the house by meatloaf.

For very different reasons (I suspect) from many of the above selections this always brings a lump to my throat!

Mine's the ginger one who raps first :)

Oh I wouldn't say that - I'm sure every one is special in some way or other! But the first few bars of Crossroads always gets me :)

There are a few ..very fond memories of a very loyal alsatian........

The summer sun is fading as the year grows old,
and darker days are drawing near,
the winter winds will be much colder,
now you're not here.
I watch the birds fly south across the autumn sky
and one by one they disappear
I wish that I was flying with them,
now you're not here

like the sun through the trees you came to love me
like a leaf on a breeze you blew away

through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way
you always loved this time of year
loose fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
cos you're not here

like the sun through the trees you came to love me
like a leaf on a breeze you blew away

a gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes
as if to hide a lonely tear
my life will be forever autumn
cos you're not here

Maybe not a lump, I don't think there are any songs that do that for me, but certainly poignant is Van Morrison, Have I told you lately [that I love you] - Mr LL and myself had the great pleasure of seeing the man himself performing what has always been a favourite song live at Kenwood a few weeks ago. We should all remember to tell our loved ones we love them more often ;)

Prefer the original video though.

Hi Spence,

I wouldn't say it's one of my favourite Floyd songs, I find it too traumatic - almost an ordeal - to listen to. I do rate it, however, as the most powerful and compelling song I've heard and the only one that makes me sob uncontrollably.

John
