I'm thinking about getting a fast lens mainly for low light indoor photos where a flash might be a bit too intrusive, gigs / parties and other similar sort of occasions like that as my 24-105, whilst a good lens, i feel isn't really fast enough so the iso ends up going up and up and picture quality starts to suffer as a result. It might also get used outdoors, landscapes etc maybe as another walkabout lens.

This is where i need suggestions / feedback from you :). People who have been in a similar situation and what did you go with and why? Did you feel you made the right choice?

I have made a list of lenses i think might do the job but not sure which would be best suited to my needs.

Canon 35mm F2 is (i believe the non is is a little slow to focus?)
Canon 35mm 1.4L
Canon 50mm 1.4

Any others worth considering? I'd prefer to stick to Canon but might be persuaded otherwise.

I shot gigs with my 70-200 f2.8 and my 24-1-5 without issues at ISO 12800. How far away do you think you'll need? I guess that will determine the focal length required.

Bearing in mind the uses you want it for I would suggest the 35mm 1.4L is it will cover all the uses you list and produce good images.

More often than not the shots will be of local bands in pubs / clubs so the reach of a 70-200 and to a lesser extent the long end of the 24-105 won't be necessary. I found that at 12800 things started to get a bit grainy, maybe i am just being overly picky?

Than ks for the input do far guys, i'll check out the other suggestions :).

Any fast prime below the 85mm range will do the trick TBH but i think any list of canon fast primes has to include the holy trinity.. And in my honest opinion they have come of age with the release of the 5D3, they always seemed to be somehow a little lacking on other bodies.

35L
50L
85L

But if your on a tighter budget the Sigma trinity is about to get very interesting with the new ART range.

I think the Sigma's could possibly stand comparison regardless of budget. I have the 50 and 85mm f1.4 and both are good, the 85 being the better and reports seem to be saying that the 35mm is very good.

Having said that, my recent experience with legacy lenses has convinced me that many lenses are more than good enough and that the final degree of performance is only visible when things are pushed to extremes both when taking the picture and viewing it.

Thanks for the input guys, went with the new Sigma 35mm 1.4 in the end, so far i am quite pleased with it, loving the bokeh at wider apatures :).

Thanks again.
