Yes
At the moment I have a Nokia E71 and it's great but as I can get an upgrade, I am thinking of going the Android route.

What would you suggest or where might I find good reviews of the Android scene?

Thanks, Kevin

Ive had a HTC desire for about a month and absolutely love it! Is my first smartphone, and got a great deal with tea-mobile

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S, which is ok (awful camera though) - but like all Androids you have to be prepared to be geeky to get the best of out them (Reflashing firmware is not for the nervous) - it was very "sticky" until rooted & changed to latest firmware.

There's probably a new version due shortly as its a year old (...Nexus S...?)

Apart from that, the HTD Desire / HD seems quite popular. And there's a load of cheap ones coming out now (get what you pay for, of course...)
More info than you probably ever wanted to know here :

Desire, easily one of the best hardware/android combos available, and can be had without the painful stinging sensation in the wallet that comes with an iPhone!

Another vote for the desire. Awesome little phone, got a few helpful photography apps on it, battery life on my one though is pretty poor, whether or not thats the way i use it thats causing that i dont know.

The built in WIFI hotspot is a brilliant addition aswell.

having a snoop around and looks like the replacement is out in June, called...wait for it...Samsung Galaxy S2!

looks great, and i'm due an upgrade next week but don't really want to get the galaxy s and be stuck with it for 2 years if the new one is out in a few months (new HTC is out soon too)

Same. It's not really a problem if you have access to power during the day to top it up, but I do have to charge mine every 24 hours if I'm not connected to wifi.

The only thing that let's it down, but to be fair it's a similar story with a lot of smartphones. Huge touchscreen and lots of connectivity = 24 hours between charges.

I have the E71 too. I've had it for a couple years now, and while I like it as a phone, the internet is terrible - it's unbelievably slow. It either takes minutes to connect, or doesn't connect at all. And that's in the center of London. Apps are also rubbish. Slow and clunky, and crap screen space.

I've been toying with the idea of buying an HTC Desire HD. However, I just don't know if I can part with buttons. There's a lot to be said for buttons. I'm really not a fan of all this touch screen nonsense. But if that doesn't bother you, then check out the Desire HD.

The Desire / HD will be worth a check out - cheers.

Lots of reading in the links above, thanks!

I have the HTC Desire and its a great "Smartphone" does everything I want and more. Ditched the TomTom as soon as I got it, got the Golfshot app for when I'm out on the course and a few other apps as well.

TBH its a really good phone and thats coming from a Mac guy of numerous years. The HTC is so customisable its unreal, you very rarely see a Desire that is the same, unlike a certain other phone I could mention.

Samsung Galaxy S2 is being launched soon, so maybe worth a look. I don't know if it upgrades the camera from the original S.
Otherwise the HTC Desire range although they are a bit bulkier.

I was looking at moving from a windows mobile phone to Android but didn't really want to commit to a long contract then find out I hated it so I bought an Orange San Francisco.

It is a fully specced & easily rooted/flashed/customised PAYG phone for £100. Not as fast as the latest generation phones but plays Angry Birds so what more do you need.........

:)

My friend just bought that for his son and he loves it.

I had a San francisco. Problem was it soon made me wanting more. So Ugraded to the Galaxy S.
The SanFran has limited Android 2.2 support and the Wifi on mine was tempremental.

iPhone 4!! :run away:

Looks like the Desire HD is popular; may well go for that. I've had a play with the San Fran but think it would only leave me wanting more :)

I've got an Orange San fransisco at the moment.

It works quite well, it's cheap and cheerful, but you need to be able to delve a little to get the best out of it.

I've rooted and changed the rom on it, installed a few apps, uninstalled the ones which kill the battery/cause problems and am now running a fairly stable build on it. For £79.99 its pretty much a bargain at the moment, but not as trouble free as an iphone.

And before anyone starts, my main phone is an iphone4.

If you want an easy life and fancy being tied into the Apple ecosystem then the iPhone4 is a great device.

If you want a slightly harder life, cheaper/free apps (with ads) then Android is for you. Hardware wise the Desire is a good handset but is now quite dates, though its still under 12 months old I beleive.

With both platforms there are new revisions coming out in the next few months so it might be worth hanging on for a bit. Perhaps get a San Francisco to dabble in Android first then sell it and get the latest and greatest device when they are released?

Who're Angry Birds?

Pete

With so many new handsets due out over the next couple of months or so, I wouldn't be looking to upgrade now.

My Desire is due for upgrade in June and I'm looking at the Motorola Atrix or HTC Pyramid if it comes out here in the UK.

For those of you who can't part with buttons, maybe check out the Desire Z.

desire/desire HD or nexus S and anyday now HTC incredible S is out :) Ive seen adverts from carphonewarehouse already :)

Is the HD much different than the non-HD version?

Have you tried the charge, turn off, unplug, recharge etc etc trick? Did wonders for mine!

Not sure about the differences between the original and the hd..its bigger I know that much! Camera is better to I undrstand.

camera is better (8mp vs 5mp), its got a much bigger screen (which does make a big difference especially for web browsing), and the buttons at the bottom are replaced with touch buttons.

the only negative i can say about it is that they have done away with the little trackball from the desire as i really liked that!

If you want to make phone calls, avoid the SE Xperia X8, terrible reception on it.

Toall those supporting the Desire, does the lack of memory not bother you? With only around 140Mb of memory you can download a few apps but with some big ones around it gets eaten way too quickly

Sure you can use Apps2SD but half the member is still stored on the phone and many big apps don't asupport apps to SD (without rooting the phone).

I LOVED the Desire apart from that - A great phone but for the memory alone the Desire HD wins and I have one of these now. A fantastic phone with 1Gb of memory on camera and the ability to add plenty on the SD card. I have over 100 apps downloaded and still have over 750Mb of storage. With the desire I was always running out of space.

I actually preferred the size of the Desire though to be honest but that large HD screen makes reading web and pdf files pretty easy.

Flash support is good too. That's what drew me away from the iphone.

I went for the Incredible S, for me the Desire HD just felt slightly too bulky. Loving it right now.
