Yes
Right going to let you lot guide me now

Both have the camera I want in stock to collect at the same price

Which one would you recommend, actual buying experience would be helpful

Cheers

I wouldn't think twice - John Lewis!

i dont think it matters tbh, their both high street retailers, both will want to sell you warenty, both will refund if theres a problem go for the one nearest the car park ;)

Also i find not all companies stock levels are that acurate so i hope you manage to get one.

Going by bus and they both had them in stock at the particular shops yesterday

Shame one isn't cheaper than the other, could have done a bit of price matching at whoever I choose
Do you reckon its worth a haggle?

That's interesting, mine wouldn't but they would match WHE which turned out cheaper the amazon anyway:)

Do John Lewis still give 3 year warranties on electrical, if so John Lewis.

My local Jessops matches Amazon (and other www) prices, so might be worth checking that out...

Check out the cost of the warranties.

I've bought a 350D and a 70-300mm IS USM lens from Jessops and the extended warranty was about 10% of the cost for 3 years.

I thought this was quite a good deal since some of these warranties can cost 30% or more of the cost of the item.

John Lewis 3yr warranties on electrical are free last time I was in there.:)

Go into Jessops- tell them John Lewis are doing it for the same price & see if they will knock something off or throw in something for free.

Don't think they offer the 3-year warranty on cameras, I certainly didn't get one with my D40, they did haggle over the price though. Which was nice. :D

John Lewis everytime the customer service is much better

I would flip a coin, because at the end of the day it doesn't matter who you buy from. I have had a John Lewis card for twenty years, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy something elsewhere if it really was cheaper. I bought my Sony Alpha 700 from Jessops, because they beat all the other prices, and their staff at my branch were very helpful.

Jessops - John Lewis don't need your business anywhere near as badly as Jessops do. It's a no-brainer really.

As someone who worked in JL for 20 years and also has had bad experiences with Jessops i can only recommend JL. They price match too you know "never knowingly undersold" is or was their motto :)

Opinion seems to be leaning towards John Lewis, suppose I am too

Certainly seem the less likely to cease trading, daresay the camera would still be covered though in case of a warranty claim

Think I will just see which one is more helpful/pleasant tomorrow

Tbh if your just after the camera and its the same price some where else go to the nearest one as they are both made the same etc.. but as others said look for the extras :D in each shop :P

I vote for John Lewis if only for the peace of mind and that thers a stronger chance that they will be around to honour any guarantee, as said above already

If we all take that attitude ^^^^^ then Jessops really are doomed. What a shame :'(

From my bitter experiences with Jessops they deserve doom!

I was in Jessops today, wouldnt touch Amazon prices. I wanted a SB600, but he said no. Price difference is too big not to get from Amazon, such a shame, he lost a £170 sale.

A new twist, Argos are the same price too and in stock to collect from store

Too many choices

Think I'd go for John Lewis, always had really good service from them.

So there's:

John Lewis - selling the item you want at £x.xx - if it breaks it goes back to the manufacturer.

Argos - selling same item, at same price. If it breaks, it goes back to the manufacturer.

Jessops - Also selling the same item at the same price. If it breaks, it goes back to the manufacturer. BUT, you'll get 8% back via Quidco.

What's so difficult about this?

Quite simple, i'm not buying online, so Quidco isn't an option

Going with cash to walk away with a camera tomorrow

No problems, but to clarify in case you mean you want to collect it and not wait for delivery you can buy online via quidco and then collect at store.

John lewis all the way, standard 2 year warranty on cameras, and if you ever have to return, a far better customer service,to be honest a far better customer service anyway, and without doubt they will be around far longer than jessops will, if your lucky and jessops sell cheaper John lewis will match there price, it's a no brainer, it is a shame about jessops problems, but a lot of it is self inflicted unfortunately.

I got my Nikon D90 from John Lewis Brent Cross in April @ £743 for Camera plus 18-105 lens plus extra years warrantee free. no problems with Camera exelent buy.

Seems really weird these days actually going to a shop and paying cash to take the item away there and then

Think that's where my dilemna has risen from, so used to using Amazon and the like that its unusual now to just go shopping.

There is an independant shop too, but there price is off with the fairies and non-negotiable.
Nice to have these shops I suppose, but not at the expense of an extra 100 quid

In spite of all that's been said I remain convinced that we'll miss Jessops if they do go down. Good luck with JL - sounds like the after sales service is good :)

What about London Camera Exchange (digital) :D , Curry's, depends what camera you want to buy, but assuming you have chosen JL, then one of the standard selection of consumer camera's.......

As has been mentioned, you still get the 8% Quidco when reserving online and collecting in a Jessops store.

Nothing exciting, just a Canon 500D for a quid under 600, but in these harsh economic times still want the best deal with a bit of after sales care thrown in

Thought I might give Jessops the chance to dissuade me from going 400 yards up the road, but had a bad experience in there last time

Bought a Nikon Coolpix years ago and they price matched Amazon, went back last year to get my kid a Canon compact and politely asked if they still matched online
Bloke went into one about how that nearly did for them, told him to calm down and stop chucking his toys out.
Explained that for all the best will in the world I wasn't going to pay an extra 45 quid, wouldn't even meet me halfway, so not overly hopeful this time.

Quick update

Went to Jessops first, not very helpful asistant and wouldn't budge on price or when asked offer any extra small goods

On my way to John Lewis, nipped into Curry's to check out what they had, on the shelf for £639, but very helpful and knowledgable chap offered to price match

Went in John Lewis, had to go and find an assistant, knew nothing about cameras and didn't offer to go and get anyone who did, no movement on price either

Simple choice, back to Curry's another long chat with the chap about cameras in general and offered the Camera for £596
No attempt to sell me extra warranty although did mention their accidental damage cover which sounded quite good

Not what I expected, but top service and would recommend anyone wanting a consumer type camera in Cambridge to seek out Simon in the Lion Yard branch of Curry's
