Where do I buy from, Jessops or John Lewis?

I was in Jessops today, wouldnt touch Amazon prices. I wanted a SB600, but he said no. Price difference is too big not to get from Amazon, such a shame, he lost a £170 sale.

I love this frame of mind.

It doesn't work that way.

"You lost a £170 sale", yeah except I'd be losing £50 from that sale anyway so why would I do it? I'd get in trouble for making negative profit!

Quick update

Went to Jessops first, not very helpful asistant and wouldn't budge on price or when asked offer any extra small goods

On my way to John Lewis, nipped into Curry's to check out what they had, on the shelf for £639, but very helpful and knowledgable chap offered to price match

Went in John Lewis, had to go and find an assistant, knew nothing about cameras and didn't offer to go and get anyone who did, no movement on price either

Simple choice, back to Curry's another long chat with the chap about cameras in general and offered the Camera for £596
No attempt to sell me extra warranty although did mention their accidental damage cover which sounded quite good

Not what I expected, but top service and would recommend anyone wanting a consumer type camera in Cambridge to seek out Simon in the Lion Yard branch of Curry's

I'm pleased you got sorted!
Unfortunately your experience describes why I have absolutely no loyalty to any particular firm anymore. They can all be good at times and give excellent service and a little flexibility on price, but equally they can be totally indifferent, and just not worth dealing with. And the odd thing is, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to who's going to be best at any one time. You did the sensible thing though, and tried a few.

Yes, true, but someone else has posted that Jessops in Portsmouth (I think it was) would match Amazon AND online prices. So they can do it.

99% of shops can match online, but they dont.

I agree, some people seem to think that the selling price is 100% profit :-)

I sell cars, and at the moment with scrappage offers, some cars make as little as £187 profit, and still people think you have thousands to give away :-)

Thought I might give Jessops the chance to dissuade me from going 400 yards up the road, but had a bad experience in there last time

See, that would have made my mind up for me without even thinking about it. There's so many options of where to buy from these days why would I give anyone a second chance? I'd actually prefer to pay more than go back to somewhere that I'd had a crappy experience of.

Are you saying that Jessops' buy price is £50 MORE than Amazon's sell price? I find that hard to believe.

It really is down to the sales assistant in some cases. If you find one that helps you read the shelf label, it's time to move on. Sadly many are on poor wages and unmotivated. But the companies need to look at the effect it is having on the bottom line, because it really can mean the difference between a sale and none.

And if the company made 50p, it's better for turnover and better than losing a customer potentially for several items. And it gets bad press which can spread like wildfire through the internet - particularly on forums like this.

In answer to the original question, JL as I would not be surprised to see Jessops disappear altogether from the high street in the near future. As internet take-up escalates, there won't be enough people who need 'assistance' and have no idea what things cost to keep it going.

JL dont give 3 years warranty on all electricals, just tvs, which is one reason why you should buy a tv from them. But you're not. I'd say flip a coin. Even if you bought from Jessops and got a 3 year warranty, and they went bust tomorrow, the warranty is not with Jessops but with D+G so that doesnt make a difference.

Jessops in Hedge End, near Portsmouth. They have price matched on both occasions I have asked... against Amazon prices.
