Hi im all new to Dslr really compared to pthers on here and wanted to get one.so i went out and bought a Nikon D90 after so much searching around in internet. But there seems to be something of a bad stigma when it comes to Nikon.....A few members on other sites have slagged me off cos ive a Nikon..ive been called a Nikon punk to name a but a few.

Why whats up with them?anybody got the answers?

I wouldn't loose any sleep over it, your the one using the camera and if your comfortable with it and it does what you need then that's all that matters :)

I bought a Nikon D40 nearly 2 years ago, and I love it, not the most complicated in the world, but it's great and I'm well pleased.

My brother on the other hand bought a canon (not sure of the model) and he slagged my D40 off something rotten.

It seems to me that Nikon owners not only like their Nikon kit, but also respect Canon stuff.

BUT (my personal view) Canon owners tend to have a complete hatred of Nikon gear.

I think the bottom line Tarny is this: If you enjoy what you bought, then tell anyone who slags it off to go and stick their Canon gear up their bott bott!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm assuming that it'll only be the Canon boys who have a problem!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, my brothers photos were always *****.....All the "Canon" gear and no idea comes to mind!!!!!!!!!

Oh you will find that there is a whole Canon vs Nikon thing going on but fear not there are those of us who are bioptical and will quite happily shoot with both/either. And then there are some really "different" people who shoot with old light tight boxes with real film in them!

Ignore and go out and make pictures :)

I think it's just a bit of light-hearted rivalry. Nothing to worry about, it just seems to be a long-standing joke that one camp hate t'other bust most people don't honestly give a hoot.

I've shot with Canon and think they have some amazing gear, but for me at the time Nikon landed on my lap for a job I offered to help with and I just found myself looking for Nikon gear as I liked it so much.

Broadly speaking, people are idiots. Let them live their lives as after all, ignorance is bliss...

i was told when i moved from canon to nikon, that i had gone over to the darkside

They own a Canon. As others have mentioned, it's a Canon vs. Nikon thing. The problem is, the Canon vs. Nikon thing only exists in the mind of Canon owners, they see it as some sort of competition.

Nikon owners really don't care what other people shoot with. We just let them get on with it, and we get on with what we're shooting.

It makes no odds to me what anybody else shoots as long as I'm happy with the results I'm getting.

I think it's just a bit of light-hearted rivalry.

Sometimes it's not so light hearted - often Canon owners defending their choice of gear. :)

fixed that for you ;)

both brands take good or horrendous photos based upon the operator...

Both can take great photos, there's little between them in the grand scheme of things. If you see people knocking the other brand then it's either fanboyism, which you should ignore, or it's a bit of banter, which if I were you I'd join in with for the lols :D

Both can take great photos

Both can take crap ones too. In reality, there is no Nikon vs. Canon any more. Both companies produce outstanding bodies that excel in different areas. Now it's Body A vs. Body B (regardless of manufacturer).

I agree most of it is friendly banter as most Canon users need L plates on their lenses.

Well quite... a camera is just a tool and what it produces depends on the person behind the controls.

Canon vs. Nikon vs. Olympus vs. Pentax ultimately means nothing if you're a crap photographer.

If I couldn't get a decent shot out of ANY camera I'd blame the user, not the tool.

Biggest load of [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] :D There are a few Nikon and Canon users who fight over who has the biggest Dick, but to put all the blame on Canon users isn't true.

Both are excellent cameras, top end Nikons are, I believe, a bit better with AF and wheather sealings, but that may change next year.

The inportant thing is the operator of the darn thing!

easy answer - you have just been visiting the wrong sites ;)

Still, you are here now, so you should be ok, as long as you get the humour that comes wth the cross board friendliness

Wow, you think you've got it bad - be a Pentax shooter; for some reason that seems to encourage wrath from several quarters...

Pentax? 35mm Film aren't they?

;):D

You think you've got problems, I've got a Sony A700. Never mind that it is a cracking camera built like the proverbial brick, because it is a Sony it is considered by the ignorant masses to be a toy. A guy on one forum was of this opinion and was extremely puzzled as to how I could take such good pictures with it. He had a Canon 40D and his photos were so-so.
Is this because the 40D is rubbish? Not a bit of it, it's an excellent camera, but in this case it was let down by the numpty behind it.

Exactly!

Yeah, but the smilies must have indicated the joke? :p

I really have no care for brand rivalry - as an owner of a DSLR, you automatically have a keen intrest in photography - that's enough for me. I really dont care what brand people opt for. I appreciate photography, enough said.

Me too!

Bad, bad generalisation. I've seen it from the Nikon side just as much as the Canon side.

I happen to be a Canon shooter, and I have never took the **** out of someone because they own a Nikon kit.

And the (not so) ironic thing is the comment came from a Nikon shooter... lol.

Phew! You think you've got problems, I've just admitted on a gardening forum that I've bought a Mountfield lawnmower. You should have heard the Hayter boys - kept on about how their mowers have more horsepower and their blades are much sharper. That provoked an arguement with the traditionalists who fiercely maintain that their old-fashioned hand push Ransomes give an almost indefinable quality to the cut, which results in a better striped effect that is more pleasing to the eye.

A Qualcast user really wound up the Hayterites by claiming that although the centres of their lawns were O.K. the edges were badly defined. They hit back with claims that their L series blades were the sharpest on the market and that the grass boxes on the Qualcasts were too small. One guy with a Flymo tried to join the debate but they all laughed at him and said flymos were O.K. if you've just got a window box but real gardners would never use them.

I shut them all up when I posted some pictures of my lawn. They couldn't believe that you could get such an even cut from a rotary and one even remarked at how green my grass was. They were also gobsmacked by the straightness of my lines and were amazed that I'd cut it at midnight. One of the large format ride-on brigade claimed that his Honda had better low light performance because it produced less noise and got quite upset when he heard that I'd also cut my neighbour's lawn - apparently amateurs like me should stick to just mowing our own lawns for pleasure with our "toy" mowers and leave the paid jobs to the "real" gardeners like himself who had the professional equipment.

At that point I logged off and went out to cut my lawn for a while in the evening sunshine whilst I listened to the birds in the trees and watched the flowers gently waving in the breeze. To me, that's what gardening is all about - not what tools you use. I hate to think what they'll say on the forum when the find out I've bought a Spear and Jackson E-Series spade for my vegitable patch!

Great post John. Coming from Ipswich though has to be a Ransomes! ;-)

Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax. Fuji, Olympus..... So what to what ever you own...

You want advice on how to do this or that or maybe you've had a problem with something - then you will get an answer that will help you out regardless of what's in your hands....... To me thats all that counts!!

Quite right, Nigel, support your local industry. Shame we can't do that with cameras, imagine having arguements on the forum about which is the best DSLR - Corfield or Reid? :D

I use Nikon AND Canon so couldn't give a hoot. There's particular models I like in both camps but at the end of the day they're just cameras so I wouldn't worry about what you use or what people say.

As far as I'm concerned there's enough amazing Canon AND Nikon photographs on view to prove that if somebody thinks one is so bad - it must be them not the camera.

It's just brand snobbery.

There is an old adage that is particularly apt to this situation: It's not what you've got, but what you do with it that counts! ;)

And Olympus and Sony and Pentax! :)
