My friend seems to be drilling it into my head that Canon`s are better :cuckoo:
But because im buying my first next week I`ve decided on a Nikon :)

So can i get your views please?

Whatever suits the person best! I hope you've got a tin hat at the ready :D

Popcorn smiley has vanished, I guess for this exact reason...

Popcorn anyone??

As chris says, have a feel and play and get an idea with which camera suits you, and only you. If a canon feels good to you, then great, if its a nikon, then great too!! Your the one using it daily! :)

**** off to bed before you start another war. :bat:

:D

If you ask a Nikon owner they will probably say Nikon and if you ask a Canon owner they will probably say Canon, with a few in between who want to swap between them. And the other brand owners saying try something different.

Each I'm sure has strengths and weaknesses and the choice can be somewhat subjective. It can be down to something as simple as what each brand of camera feels like in your hands. It depends what you want and what you think the camera/brand can then give you at the end of the day.

Defiance - loving the avatar :)

if all your mates shoot canon, it would make sense from a learning/borrowing point of view?

Try to think not only about what you want to do now...........but where you see yourself in three or four years time. Consider both as a system, not just one camera. Look at the lenses available and how they will fit with your needs in the future and what the costs are.

A flippant purchase now could cost you dear in the long term and that goes for both brands.

Thanks for the advice, And Foggy im just asking :P So F u lol, Anyways I think ill have a play about when i go in soon :)

Thanks guys =]

 to me Canon make there own sensor, body's, processors, lens, printers - its a system for me - just my views.

If you ahve lots of friends with Canon then buying in to that brand will let you borrow lenses etc if you ever need to. But otherwise play with both brands and see what you feel is best...or do a search on any photography forum anywhere and read the 5 billion arguments that have been had on the very subject :D

Go with what feels best for you.
Ali B is right when she says you should consider the system not just a particular camera. Personally I prefer Canon, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with anyone else preferring Nikon, or any other make.

The best advice I could give is get yourself off to a decent shop and physically get a hold of the camera(s) you fancy. What looks brilliant on paper sometimes just doesn't feel the same in reality. and that matters!

cheers

You'll be fine with either, or the other brands eg Sony for that matter.

If you've opted for Nikon enjoy the dark side.

Most important thing? Get out and take some photos!

Good luck

Al

Interesting that my most pointless forum comment ever is the most popular.

I told him he would start a war. Waiting for him to start a Wedding thread then head off to OOF for some politics and religion.:rules:

Something was needed to spice up the C vs N debate :) lol

Read plenty and see if a particular brand has limitations if you want to take it far or buy second hand later on.

Then the important bit is to test them out. Sometimes a camera 'feels' just right, even though you're pretty decided on another brand (this happened to me)

All the best

A war in which I see Canon have won??? LOL bring it on darksiders...... :D

Have fun in the war......sleepytime for me!

Nikon = precision optics company that also make cameras
Canon = photocopier manufacturer that also makes cameras

:naughty: :exit:

They make photocopiers.. ;)

Beat me to it, TBH they both make good cameras and lenses, it is dfown to personal choice. I doubt most people could tell if a photo was taken with a Canon or a Nikon by just looking at a print.

Actually, I found (much to my horror ) that when I analyzed my favourite shots in the Strobist Flickr group most were taken with a Canon....:suspect::shrug:

they are both as good as each other except for one or two models at the top end D3 vs MKIII the main thing is they are different systems with different handling characteristics and functions and layout of buttons/menu :)

You really need to try both but ive only ever used Canon DSLR but thats because its all i've been used to as the guy who trains me shoots Canon :)

Yes that's because Canon and Photoshop go hand in hand :naughty:

I'm saying nothing new to this "friendly banter" other than this, until the 7D came out there was no fast shooting crop camera around so for a while Nikon took all the semi serious high speed shooters. Then Canon bought the 7D out and made me think twice before buying the D300s. The picture quality is very good on the 7D as long as you don't go above 200 iso  and it does sound like a Tonka toy being hit hard with a babies rattle when it fires at full pelt. (Tin had on )

But entry level Nikons will perform much better at higher iso levels, that is until you get in to the range of D700 vs 5D mkii. Even as a Nikon user I have to say from the 5D up it's an even shooting game, but on entry level the Nikon does has the edge, the D5000 and the D90 in particular. The D90 is very sharp and it was the good bits from the D90 that Nikon added to the D300s so for less than £800 with a great kit lens the D90 is what I recomend to most.

Just my very humble opinion

What have i started :bang:
