1 - THINK ABOUT RESOLUTIONS. As we look forward to a brand new year it is essential that we resolve to make as many pledges to ourselves as possible. And in order to define this new year as totally different and certainly better than any other before it, it is crucial that these promises are shaky, unrealistic, poorly planned and generally unobtainable. everyone does it, so don't feel bad at this stage - stick to the programme because it works, I promise!
2 - WRITE DOWN RESOLUTIONS. Now this is where it starts to get interesting. after spending Christmas week disgusted with your agonising greed and self loathing, you undoubtedly put a lot of effort into resolution number one, and now things get shockingly real when you motion to write them down. That's right, transfer your painfully hopeless affirmations to paper, where you can casually scan over the empty words whilst conspiring to ignore them throughout all of January. HOT TIP! Use block lettering filled with pretty crayon colours so you can admire the cynically metaphorical notion of your own blank, unfulfilled convictions for as long as you leave the damn list magneted to the fridge.
3 - BE A BETTER PERSON. I've always thought it a good idea to be vague about resolutions because that way, achievement is so much easier to, erm, achieve. This one really is a stunning catch-all, and essentially means be nicer to more people, work harder at the things you love, get outside your own head as often as possible, and generally stop being a total s***cake to the planet. Do not panic if you can't manage all or even any of these, just set up a charity direct debit or something.
4 - BE A BETTER PHOTOGRAPHER. I was struggling to understand what this actually means, and so by the unholy power of Google I looked it up before writing to find
plenty of blog advice (blogvice?) on turning to manual mode, shooting raw and understanding f-stops. But since I know f-all about this technical stuff, I chose instead to reflect on all the other things it takes to be a photographer. Thus, i have decided to [a] take more pictures, since the law of probability dictates i will surely have more pictures worth keeping (I can beat five from last year, right?);
stop looking through the viewfinder so much and start shooting blind (I saw William Klein do it once), and finally [c] stop complaining about the industry (its messed up, everyone knows it, but for the sake of skint PR firms everywhere can we just get on with it?!). There's probably other things i could have added here, but advice really isn't my thing in 2013.
5 - EAT MORE FRUIT. Because we should all eat more fruit.
Happy New Year everyone. Lets just get on with it, shall we?
