Hi

I took my Olympus OM-1 to hull city on Saturday using Kodak ultramax 400

Sure I shot at 1/500 iso 400 f11

And these are awful what went wrong pls full rolls the same

Ohh ffs I can’t post photo says invalid or to large

Another thing is that to get here, the processed negatives have been digitised and we don't know how that was done ... does what we see represent the originals?

It's either under exposing or could be the Exposure compensation dial has been moved and needs to be re-adjusted.

From looking at the images supplied its a cloudy day. so the sunny sixteen for that ISO film would be speed 400 at F5.6.

A lot of the photo is undercover and in shade So another stop or two would be needed

If if was imperative that ISO was 400 then I would have gone with speed 250th at f2.8 or even 125 possibly, Its a decision you try and guestimate based on the circumstances you find yourself in, You were not trying to "freeze" action I presume so you have further latitude on the speed side of things, you do not state the lens bot there should be little problem going even down to a 60th.

The area outside of the stadium looks like it's pretty well exposed and if that is the case I suppose either the aperture or the shutter speed or a combination of both need to change to expose the inside of the stadium better.

Don't beat yourself up about it. It looks like a simple error in exposure. You'll get it right next time.
Correct,

He did brilliant at the ice hockey with the pentax.

Perhaps the best option may have been the Sony and convert to Ultramax in PP.

Certainly underexposed. I don't know how bright it was, but from my considerable experience in underexposing film, I'd estimate 3 stops under from the results as shown.

so i sut in these seats every home game

the light meter isnt working tried batterys its just not moving

so if i was to try again next home game same seast go to F2,8 iso 400 at 1/125?

its generally dull in Ull weather wise ha

I am not trying to be clever here but have you turned the light meter on?

The small dial on the left between the rewind knob and the viewfinder?

Also note that the light meter on the OM1 is exactly that a meter, it will not automatically calculate exposure. The speed, f stop and iso have to be adjusted to enable the needle to move into the "correct exposure" region.

You could try an exposure phone app to assist or try bracketing across 3 stops to improve your chances and find yourself a benchmark.

not really, you have to asses the sky and try to get some indication of the brightness, it might be lovely sunny day. In which case miss the game and go take pictures, its not sunny often in Hull and they will probably lose anyway. :)

Or look at the pitch and see if there are ANY shadows or PATCHES of sunlight anywhere.
No clouds hard shadows f16 base
Cloud medium shadows F11 base
Cloud Soft shadows f8 base
No shadows or light patches f5.6

Calculations for the stands can be made from those base points

That's the theory, in practice there is a lot going on and by the time you have your settings the wind can have blown in a cloud or moved clouds away and its all changed, there is a reason auto exposure was the first development from a manual camera, it was the biggest problem to solve.

the light meter isnt moving tried new batterys just wont move its alwasy down turned the lever to on wont move

The OM1 uses the old PX13 batteries which you can't buy; so what battery are you using?

1/500th at F11 and 400ISO sounds optimistic as others have noted, its underexposed.
Perhaps worth noting if you did happen to use out of date film that coukd well exacerbated the issue.

Have you checked the wiring to the battery holder ?, it's quite common for it to corrode and break off, could be while the meter isn't working, other than that, have you put the battery in correctly? It's easy to put in upside down,
not checked wireing as im registred blnd so cant really do that batterys i teh correct way i have also troed it both ways nothing

the only way i can get the needs in the middle is if i put the shutter speed 1/4 no matter what other setting i try it goes down to the bottom

So the meter is working, when you say the needle in the middle at 1/4 of a second, what ASA and aperture are you setting??

probably still same f11 400ISO

could be about right if indoors facing away from a window

so if i stand in the street go to F2.8 Iso 400 abd use 1/4 the needle on the mmeter will be dead centre move any of them and it drops to the bottom

if you lower SIO to 100 you should see needle go up and then increase speed to 1 sec and needle should go back to middle

ill try when i get hom ei have downloaed a light meret app and go from ther eha

Seems like the meter is out by a few stops, even though there's hardly any light coming into my office window this morning, I'm getting 1/250 @ f2.8 using ASA 400.Screenshot_20251112_124256_LightMeter.jpg

Hull City on Sat against Portsmouth was 1/500th ISO 400 at F4. you were two/three stops under exposed.

If the meter is that far out, you'll need to remove the top cover, and adjust the meter. It's the part that goes under the ASA dial, you'll need to loose the one silver screw, and adjust the brass coloured one,
