What to do with an ugly patio?

I live in a flat where one room has a view over the road and the other over the back of the houses in the block. This back room has a really awful view onto a tarmac-covered space. It's around waist-level. There's a curved plastic cover for a roof-window of the flat below, and the floor of a balcony of the flat above. Everything's grey or dirty white.

There's a space of around 2-3 square meters directly below the balcony, which could be vaguely usable for something, I imagine. Half of this gets water-logged when it rains.

Completely uninspired as to what to do with it.:shrug:

Any suggestions gratefully received.

is that patio doors or a window? is the flat rented or owned by you?
 
Is the roof safe for you to walk on and are you allowed to use it? If it is I would put some decking out there and plenty of potted plants :)

My idea would be flowers. Get some nice tubs of flowers out there and that will brighten up your miserable patio area :)
 
They're windows, so you have to climb a bit to get out. Rented flat, so I guess anything would have to be reversible. Is also walkable on.
 
and maybe a couple of good quality fence panels or something similar to hide the r/h side
 
are you allowed to use the spacesince it is rented??

and since window not door, sort of not meant as a permanent exit. you may find you will be billed extra rent if you put stuff out on it

To be honest, I think plants etc wouldn't be a problem. Maybe decking is pushing it though :thinking:

thanks for the suggestions. I think we'll go for plant pots or similar.
 
Plants in pots on raised frames, be careful you don't damage the surface though, that could be an expensive mistake!

Build a clear perspex container that's about the same dimensions as the window, put it outside behind the window, fill it up with water, and then put some fishes (or any marine-life of your choice) in it, and even some water plants..
This way you can pretend that you're in some James Bond-style underwater den.

Do you know what, I would actually do that with the cat and everything :lol: :coat:
 
Put some gravel down, the really fine stuff and get some plants and small trees on the go.
 
If you have to climb out of a window to get to it I doubt it's for use by you, if I was in the flat below I wouldn't appreciate someone using my roof as a garden

paint a nice picture on the window and shine a light behind it
 
Hard to be sure from that picture but it looks more like a felted flat roof than a patio. Unless you have specific permission from the landlord, I wouldn't set foot on it.

We have curtains, blinds and shutters too. It just makes the room a little dark for some reason :thinking:

Definitely will do the small trees thing. Small gravel may get a little messy though.

The neighbours downstairs don't particularly like us anyway (we have a piano...;)) And we use the roof already - that doesn't disturb them. It's just not very pretty.

You're right actually, it's not a patio. But it's definitely ugly. We use it anyway, no-one's complained. I think greenery is the way forward :D
