Hello I am new here and decided to join after a lot of my questions I googled redirected me here a lot :) great forum.

I have 2 questions:

1. I'm looking at getting another camera body as I'm shooting events, music and festivals where it would be easier to have 2 cameras instead of switching lenses a lot. I'm not looking to go full frame as my budget won't allow for it but maybe a model that's equivelent to the D80 (but a newer model) or one that's a bit more advanced. I've been looking at the D7000 at the moment. Any suggestions would be great.

2. I enjoy shooting things up close and thinking about getting the Nikkor DX Micro 85mm F3.5 VR (as it's under £400). Might also double up as a portrait lens maybe?...I've started to assist at weddings and do a bit of portraiture. I'm going backwards and forwards not really knowing whether F3.5 is fast enough or save more money and get a faster lens!

Here's what I have at the moment (all nikkor):
DX 18-55mm F3.5 VR kit lens
DX 55-200mm F4/F5.6 VR
FX 50mm F1.8 prime

Any advice would be great!!

Thanks

Are you sure that's right mate, I wasn't aware Nikon offered such a lens?

As to your questions I recently bought a D300 as my spare body and am really pleased with it for only £400.

On DX I would probably go with the 50 1.8g rather the 85mm V.R

Another option could be the d5100 for its low light performance for Gigs/events. It's the same sensor as your d7000.

Considering your current body is a D80 the obvious (?) choice for a second would be the D90 - it would be very familiar to you unlike moving to something like a more entry level body ot the D7000.

The d7000 is probably the best option with the sounds of it in terms of body shape and weight etc. I would personally recommend a d5100 with a battery grip for a gig though as the ISO performance is the same as the D7000 (and a hell of a lot better than the D90) but the vari-angle screen proves quite handy for a gig scene so you can read some higher angles without 'spraying and praying'
Hope that helps.

Hi Holly, and welcome to the forum!

I moved up to the d7000 from the d80 and have been more than pleased with it though the d90 is worth looking at as well. If you can push yourself to the 105mm its a great lens, I bought one secondhand off MPB recetly and its great for close ups as well as portraits!

Thanks everyone for all the replies!

I didn't realise the D7000 was more of an entry level compared to the D90? Al I right in thinking that's what your saying...I was under the impression the D7000 was the newer version of the D90?

Glad to hear the d7000 was a good upgrade :) I did think maybe the D90 but I wonder if it would be too similar to the D80...whereas the D7000 would be a bigger jump? I might save a bit longer for the 105mm, would probably work out better in the long run to invest in a faster better macro than a DX alternative.

The D7000 is the model that replaced the D90....

There is going to be a D400 to replace the D300 and a D600 to replace the D700. Both cameras expecting to be prices around £1300-1700 roughly but they are yet to be announced unfortunately :( not seen any talk of a D7000 replacement yet.

The model replacing the d300 could well be replacing the d7000 too from the snippets of information I've seen here and there.

Sorry, I wasn't inferring that the D7000 is less of a camera than the D90 just that the D90 would be more familiar (and therefore pose less of a learning curve/likelihood of confusion between bodies at a critical time) to someone that already uses a D80.

Apologies for any confusion :)

I mentioned this earlier or on another thread. I believe they may merge the two as well in light of the d600.

If you still got a camera to get on with wait a few weeks. The d7000 price has already come down in the US.

Yes I see what you mean about the D80 and D90 being similar, would cause less confusion!

What did the D800 replace? thought it was the D700 replacement?

I would say the d800 is the d700 replacement too. The d600 is a stripped down budget FF model based on the d7000 body.

Didn't the D700 retail at about £1500-£1600 when introduced in 2008? So surely a D800 at £2500 couldn't be a replacement? More of an upgrade like the d3100 to the d3200.
And yeah the price of the D7000 has gone down and so has the D5100 (I work in jessops haha)

The D3 retailed at £2300 or so when it was launched, the D3s was £3600, the D4 just shy of £5000....

Just Nikon being greedy then sneaking their prices up. I went into jessops the other day to look at the D7000 looks nice but couldnt really get a feel for it as they just had body only on display...saw the D90 though and quite like it (probably because of it's similarities to the D80).

Going to have a think about it, and maybe buy another lens before another body!
