What`s it all about?

What is your main reason for posting your bird shots

  • Because I think they are brilliant and nothing else really matters.

That is a poor excuse Bill.I never had a clue about crit when I started, but for example if somebody had given some C&C and mentioned that A or B was wrong,if I never understood or I could not see what they were on about I would question that person who made that observation. Again it`s called talking Bill,you dont have to be an expert in anything other than opening your m̶o̶u̶t̶h̶ keyboard.

Seriously though, the forum and the bird section are much bigger than they used to be, and as any community grows there is far more likelyhood of some people who simply won't get on, just like out there in the 'real' world. However, if you can all accept that and accept that all opinions are valid, even if you don't agree with them, then life in the bird section would be much easier for everyone.

I don't want anyone to take offence here, though no doubt some will, but is a fact that almost everyone that comes to our attention in this section is a middle aged man, not 20 somethings with a chip on their shoulder, but grown men who you assume are fully integrated members of society. Yet there are days when an outsider would think they were viewing a thread full of hormonal teenagers. Seriously, life it too short to take short to umbrage because someone has a different opinion to you on how a blackbird or a buzzard should be photographed. Sharing opinions and advice is what made this forum so good, it is up to you lot to decide and act upon it if you want it to be like that again.

You cannot accuse me of not "Talking" Rich …….. I do more than my fair share

PS - how's my Kingfisher images getting on, I'm expecting processing perfection to turn those poor images into masterpieces ……… I spent three or four uncomfortable hours in a canoe chasing the bloody things ….. even though my son was paddling

Now Bill I did not accuse you did I? We all know you got more Rabbit than Sainsbury`s :p I was refering to the fact you mentioned that some felt they could not crit for whatever reason,to me there is no excuse not to learn about something like that.You do not have to be an expert but just share your thoughts,say what you see or feel. I bet if I offered up £50 to the one who I thought could best explain something about a picture, you would have every Tom Dick and Harry shouting from the roof top.
 
I think that we should appoint a Parliamentary Sub Committee to look into it or merge the Bird Section with the "Discussion of Art" Threads

Anyway, some people just like looking through the posts without participating and that's fine too (so don't worry about the number of views).

Thanks Tim, I always was a trend setter it stared in 1969 when I bought a Gannex (coat)

you may have to look that one up in images, Harold was a great influence on me

I have to ask, when sitting around waiting for those birds, do you contemplate life over a goodly pipe of tobacco too?


It also occurs to me, and I must apologise for referring to all you chaps as youngsters because I am the middle aged woman that is currently running a thread in the projects section on the study of... ehem... Lego. Second childhood, here I come :D

Never smoked in my life …….. although I was once given a pipe as a present by a Belgian in 1980, I was working there at the time …………. I said to him, Christian, "you know I don't smoke", he replied "it is for the image" …… I've still got the pipe

I would say that a lot of "birders" are retired, i.e. over 60 years old, and the problem in the Bird Forum is that a lot of these young whippersnappers have no respect any more for our superior knowledge and experience……. would never have happened when I was a lad.

You may also find that when men retire, as their wives are not used to having them around during the day, they are encouraged to "take up a hobby" or "spend more time on their present hobbies", so you get encouraged to "go out" ……… my sandwiches have just got better and better and I even get the odd half a bottle of wine thrown in if I promise to stay out for the day.

So bird watching, a camera, computer and a "shed load of money" is all most of us want when we retire ……. pity really

Now I must go and have my usual afternoon "lie down"

It has been said already that if you don't want any form of critique then us the photos for pleasure section. As far as im concerned any image in the birds section can and should be critiqued when necessary. People are getting annoyed by the way that critique is put across however just as much damage is being done with people saying "Great pic" or just hitting the like button when clearly there are issues with the image in question. Its all to easy just to get into the way of thinking that your image are going great when clearly they aren't and you need work.I would like nothing more in the bird section to have that "Like" button removed as its just to easy to hit and forget and most of us do it where if it wasn't there we might offer a bit more critique and be honest.
 
It has to be said Bill, you post more than Royalmail at christmas, but you are entertaining. The forums have changed over recent years, there are no 2 ways about it, the people who use it have changed and the attitude towards crit has changed,indeed the way crit is delivered has changed. I mean, whats the point in 'great shot' or 'good', no one can learn anything from it, yet it is offered all too often,indeed there is a member (who shall remain nameless) with over 2000 posts, however the vast majority of his/her posts are 3 words or less with 'thats a cracker' being the favourite - whats the point?

I had noticed that too and know exactly who you mean. Absolute waste of time and half the time the bloody comments are wrong. Must be a method of boosting the post count. I can't see any other reason for it as it's not critique, helpful or even honest a lot of the time.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

thats not a problem restricted to birds - weddings/biz (and people and portraits generally) also suffers from "mummy says I is speshul" posters who get the right arse if anything approaching honest crit is given ... its the principal reason i rarely give crit anymore , i generally only comment on pictures by people who i know will take it in good part
