What Phone To Go For?

Where did you get it from in the end? Hopefully not BMP as I cancelled my order on friday due to time constraints...

T-mobile eventually sorted it...many telephone calls later...

Based on this article, it sounds like demand for the Evo 4G outside the US is so strong that HTC are considering making it available across the world under the name HTC ACE (see article below)

http://phandroid.com/2010/07/11/the-htc-ace-will-it-be-a-gsm-version-of-the-evo-4g/

I would be surprised if it didn't get produced in GSM guise!

Interesting. :)

I know of 3 other HTC phones that are supposed to be coming out in Q4 of this year (October and November apparently) , potentially a mix of Android and WinPho 7 and one "pro" version with a keyboard. At least one with the new 1.2GHz dual core and one with a 4.3" screen. It's one of the reasons I decided to cancel, means when I get another chance to get a phone there should be the next generation on tap. :D

Good to hear. :)

I walked into the CPW round the corner from my office and bought my Desire a couple of weeks ago....stock problems?

I do like the phone, but it's taken some tinkering to get it working how I want it (rooted/2.2 rom installed and various other tweaks). I'm happy with it all apart from the shockingly bad battery life, but at least I can carry a spare if I really need it.

I wouldn't recommend one to someone who's not technical though. Apple do make the only 'smartphone for dummies'.

I know what you mean. I walked into the CPW and picked one up no problem at all.

It is a bit more technical in comparison to the iphone, which is by far the simplest phone to use imo. However, I wouldn't let that put anyone off from it, it's still a cracking piece of kit and a couple of weeks on I'm still more than happy with it :)

It's a bit hit and miss tbh, some places have loads some have very few. I was going with BMP because they had by far the best deal.

Either way HTC are having huge trouble keeping up with the demand for them and many places have a backlog and the ones they get in are only just covering the backlog.

Battery life should improve over time although a different ROMs can have a massive difference on the battery life. I know quite a few people who now get a couple of days normal usage out of them, even a whole day with liveral use of wifi/3g, GPS and phone conversations. :)

Well I have to agree completely with that! :D

I ended up going against my original thoughts and despite a few misgivings, I caved in and bought the iPhone 4.

I have to admit to being pleasantly impressed... I've deliberately tried to recreate the signal issues without a great deal of success (so I reckon that's been over-hyped along with everything else). I was a bit worried about what would happen when I went to switch everything (including paid apps and movies) over from my iPod Touch to the iPhone but I needn't have been... It was an absolute doddle to do! :)

I've only discovered a couple of minor annoyances so far... You're restricted to using the preset SMS tones (which are naff) and putting ringtones on proved to be a bit of a ball-ache until someone pointed me in the direction of audiko.net which has a stock of compatible ringtones as well as a little tool to convert .mp3's to .m4r's (which the iPhone uses).

I've got mine on a 24 month, £45 contract so the phone was only £29... I know it'll work out expensive but there wasn't a great deal of difference between that and the competition.

I got a desire 2 months ago from VODA on retention.
Great bit of kit.
Glad I didn't go for the iphone 4 - not that it is a bad bit of kit, btu the tariff I am on currently makes it a no brainer - £20pcm for 18months and free phone.
NO WAY was I going to get that on the I4.
And I'm glad as I have now got what I think is a phone that is as good as, if not better.

Now waiting for Froyo to be officially released .....

I wub my Palm Pre but no-one's going to want that are they :(

...Apparently the actually did proper tests to it as well. Bit odd though that there are still some phones that aren't affected while a lot are.

Hi Amp,

I've seen the same results and I certainly don't dispute them... Where I live in Aberystwyth doesn't have much of an O2 signal at the best of times and so I thought I'd see a more noticeable drop overall if I covered both sides of the gap on the iPhone. In all honesty, I haven't noticed anything that concerns me unduly. Even driving around rural mid-Wales hasn't presented anything out of the ordinary either.

I've either been very lucky or maybe Apple have 'fixed' this batch of phones... It's taken me nearly three weeks to get one so maybe my handset is part of a batch that's been 'corrected'. I simply don't know though. :)

I wasn't suggesting you were.:)

It still is odd though that some phones are affected and some aren't. Maybe it's a manufacturing fault or maybe some people are denser than others...

Although seriously I'd be interested to see if swapping phones with someone who says they have a problem sorts the problem out for them (ie is it user "error" or is it actually a difference between phones). :)
