What camera magazine would you guys recommend? I'm like something not too technical and with reviews of new gear and maybe tutorials on how to get certain shots.

I'd recommend going into one of the large newsagents and browsing through all the mags then pick the one that meets your needs at that time. All the mags just about cover every aspect of photography at some point in time and endlessly repeat themselves.

Hi Chris

I've always liked Digital SLR Photography. There's always a good balance of kit/book reviews, technique tips and ideas and interviews with pro's among other things.

As with all mag's you tend to see ideas repeated on a 12 month cycle but overall it's a magazine that offers a lot for photographers of all levels.

Cheers

Mark

Sounds about right, I have subscribed to a few motorcycle ones in the past, there are only so many times you can read a 600 shootout:lol:

However I found one 'Practical Sportsbike' That doesn't seem to repeat itself and has been consistantly interesting. Wondered if there was a camera one like that!

I had a 'Bike' subscription for a couple of years which ended a few months ago - about the best of the bunch I thought. I'll certainly keep an eye out for 'Practical Sportsbike'

I've read most of the mags at some point, and go through phases of getting certain ones, but then I change, and/or the mags change, and I go off them. I think there are close to 20 mags to choose from.

At the moment I think Digital SLR Photography and Practical Photography give the best mix of a bit of everything imho, with Digital SLR Photography being the most consistent atm.

As arclight said earlier, if you can, go into a large newsagents and have a browse through what's on offer, you'll hopefully find one or two that suit you. Once you've decided on one or two, getting a years subscription can save you a lot. As Gupster said, they do start repeating some technical stuff after a year or so, but there's always new gear, ;) new interviews and new pics to see.

There's quite a few subscription offers available which might be worth trying as you can get a few issues of different magazines much cheaper than on the high street to see if you like them.

Dennis Publishing have some good offers, for example you can get 5 issues of Digital SLR Photography for £5.

Or you can get 3 issues of Digital Photographer for £1 (on the digital photographer website)

Just remember to cancel your subscription after you received the issues otherwise you'll automatically get charged for an on going subscription :)

Also might be worth checking your local market. My market has a magazine stall which sells magazines from a few months ago, at 3 mags for £1.50 its a bargain! Like others have mentioned a lot of the mags repeat themselves so it doesn't really matter if you get a current issue or one that's from a few months ago.

I'm glad others have found that thing with topical magazines trying to recycle a finite amount of subject matter! My sub to Digital Camera has just ended so, on your recommendations, I have taken up the offer on Digital SLR magazine. I've never read it before but hey, you lot seem to know what you're talking about...

I have a short subscription to Digital SLR Magazine at the moment as I've just signed up for 3 issues for £3 and get a free Messenger camera bag. I've also done a similar thing to get a free tripod recently. I do read a lot of the mags online though and I do like the PhotoPlus Canon edition as it's all Canon and so it's of more interest to me.

Digital Photo for me- lots of information on all aspects of the craft

Oh and free tutorial CD's on Photoshop CS5 too

I think "Outdoor Photography" is one of the better ones, obviously if you aren't in to landscape etc it will be of limited interest though!

I agree! Best one I have read! I get the digital copy and read it on my tablet

Of the mags on the shelves, AP is the only one I get every issue of - in fact, I subscribe. The monthlies all seem to be on a 12 month cycle - it's March, must be HRD time... AP seems to cover the whole spectrum, from classic/collector articles to latest kit reviews along with interviews with top pros, readers' photos, the story behind iconic photos and also gets technical with regard to things like lens and sensor design. Being a weekly, it also tends to have news rather than churning out what we've read here a few weeks ago!

Amateur Photographer is my preferred buy as I find there is a good mix of news, features and reviews. Lots of advertising but what magazine doesn't have that these days, and anyway I love hunting throught them for a bargain or unusual bit of kit.

There's nearly always a good subscription deal going so I just subscribe for a year, have a short break of maybe a couple of months and then start again.

Love the leaper! In fact, like the whole feature. The test cards would be handy too if I didn't already have similar!

Well done on the red squirrel photos. Have the mag and thought they were very good.

I don't currently subscribe, for the reason identified above - I have had my fill of tips for taking better landscapes, etc. That said, the free tripod from a few years back still gets a fair bit of use! I find a lot of the magazines tend to be quite similar in terms of content, so if I were taking out a subscription now, I'd definitely second the suggestion of paying close attention to any good offers.

PhotoPlus and digital slr is the 2 i most read

Cheers all, I'm heading to a market Saturday I and I think there is a magazine place there, I'll check it out and grab lots of different ones.

Chris

Remember Digital SLR and Digital SLR Photography are two (very) different mags ;)

This for me too, gives you ideas and what and how to shoot it, settings to use etc and then how to edit the photos too.
