Guys I am back in the UK for a few days, any recommendations on Photography reading magazines to buy while here...............just went into WH Smith and they must have had 50 different ones???

BJP.

"Horses for courses" if you ask me. Just have flick and see what takes your fancy.

Look for articles that address any week areas you may have.

Personally I just found "Advanced Photographer" bought a copy and got some useful stuff in for me.

I used to subscribe to Outdoor Photography but haven't renewed this year, find it a bit woolly, not much useful info in there and no section on post processing techniques either.

I ended up with;
Professional Photographer
Photography monthly
Digital SLR Photography

Will give them a work over

You are allowed to look inside the mags. ;)

What are you mostly interested in? (Subjects? Reviews? Technique?)

What level are you?

If you don't have regular access to English language magazines, then the answers in this thread might be of interest.

Are you in KL? If so you can find photography magazines in Borders or MPH.

Another vote for BJP. Doesn't have any "How To" stuff but it's got plenty to read and very sensible and unbiased kit reviews. I wouldn't miss it.

I think I've tried most, if not all the magazines, over the last 7-8 years. I've changed what I get regularly over the years, as I change and the magazines change. There is one or two new ones that have arrived over the last year or so, but they haven't grabbed me when I've looked through them.

I currently get Practical Photography for their Digital SLR Skills course, which I thought could be useful. Recently I've found that Digital SLR Photography magazine has the best mix of everything, and I've been buying it almost every month.

There are about 15 magazines available, which shows how popular photography is, but it can be a bit of trial and error to get one or two that you may be happy with. There will always be an odd month when there is another mag that catches your eye for whatever reason.

A lot of people will say that they don't need mags with the internet, but I like to read the mags on the bus, and yes, on the toilet and in the bath.

The mags repeat a lot of what they do on a yearly cycle, and a lot of mags cover the same things at the same times. But you pays your money, you takes your choice. ;)

Another vote for BJP here, especially since it has gone monthly and they print it on really high quality paper, it does make a difference.

I'm a bit bored again, ;) so here is a list of all the magazine I can think of, and their websites. Have I missed any?

Some of the magazine websites are more advanced than others. ;)

It amazes me that the market can sustain so many magazines. Long may it continue. If you want a mag (I know there are those that don't touch them) then there should be something for everyone in that lot.

With the recession, WH Smith have been selling up some of their outlets, especially the ones at stations, or moving into smaller premises. The one at Charing Cross Station hasn't shrunk all that much; when it did it was because they wanted to open a separate stationery department - which, of course, is now closed.

It's a pain looking for photo mags in there now because there are dozens of magazines all squashed into a small space, most of them below waist height, and all mixed in with Photoshop mags and thick £12 "guides" to this, that, and the other. You can get far better paperback books from Amazon for not much more than this.

I was looking for Photoplus, which they used to carry regularly. But not any more.

The WH Smith in Liverpool moved a few years ago, and the new store is about a fifth of size. The magazine racks used to be 30-40 meters long. In the new store it's less than 10 meters. :bang: And a bit shorter recently when they took some of the space to put in a drinks fridge.

I can believe demand for magazines dropped that much in Liverpool.

They're cutting off there own market. Once people get out of the habit buying mags, the market dwindles. :cuckoo:

What's even more interesting is that the WH Smith in Lewisham is still huge. Why Lewisham? Do people in Lewisham read more magazines than the rest of us?

I'm half expecting WHS to start splitting up the floor space and renting it out to smaller businesses.

Personally my favorite is Digital SLR Photography. They have a great range of articles, how-to's, gear reviews, and photos for inspiration.

Their "Guide to landscape" book-a-zine is also a must-have for beginner landscape photographers, especially for only £8! Even better, in the next few months one of my photos is going to be featured in the "Expert Critique" section :)

Digital camera magazine every time, best reviews, tutorials overall quality magazine!
