What is wrong with me - cant stop buying!

Wife: Why have you bought that?
Me: It's better than the last one.
Wife: Oh right. Does it take better photos?
Me: No, same sensor.
Wife: Hmmm. Does it do better video?
Me: No, it doesn't do video at all.
Wife: Where's the auto mode?
Me: Doesn't have one.
Wife: Right. So why is this better?
Me: Ermm, it's heavier.

:)

God that sounds just like the conversation. We had last night about me wanting a 60d over my 350d.

I have a good control on my photo GAS but not on my GadgetAS....

Oh I feel better for sharing but I still want that 60d

70 x 200 f2.8 II and a 1x4 extender then that's me finished.................:p

Good to know some of you have understanding partners or have managed to conceal new gear or just don't care about their compulsive buying!
Mine has offered to buy me a new lens

No matter what I buy, if it is delivered to home it always costs less than £60 plus P&P. Honest

Reminds me of when I swapped a D5000 for a D300.

Wife: Why have you bought that?

Yup, I got that after I bought the 17-55 f/2.8 - "It doesn't zoom very far - it's rubbish. Mines (compact) zooms further than that!!" :bang:

I got caught with a new tripod, pretended it was the old cheap one, did not work, said it was my friends, did not work.

It's best to tell the truth, trust me.

I'm looking to upgrade my 550d as well, I need to tell the Mrs this time round.

:(

When your Wife stops questioning the cost of the latest bit of photography kit, it's time to get the valuers in to look at her latest handbag and shoes!

Well I'm in the boat of thinking its best just to be up front about it. Sadly learnt the hard way though.

I spent thousands (my money technically) secretly and she found out. Several months later she's gone, kids gone. Houses are going up for sale. Messy stuff!!

At the end of the day I barely used some of the stuff I bought too.

Lesson - don't lie to the one you love. Is it really worth the risk?

I did think it was a bit harsh mind to break up over seeing as I sold all my stuff. No pleasing some people.

There's an easy rule: what's hers is hers and what's yours is hers.

Superman has kryptonite and Lex Luthor. We have testosterone and women.

I got rumbled the other day. I had quietly bought a 5d mk2 from here to compliment my 7d and had it delivered to home. As it was nicely wrapped up so you couldn't tell what it was, when I got asked what it was, I casually answered "something for my tripod". Now technically that's not lying as a camera does go on a tripod, so my conscience was relatively clear.

Fast forward a week and it's our son's 6th birthday. I've got the 5d out, snapping away quite happily and revelling in the quality of images its producing. My wife even takes a few photos herself and doesn't notice the difference. Thinking I've got away with it (which I had!) I was breathing a sigh of relief. Until my friend, who's a keen photographer, boldly says to me, with my wife right next to me, "Christ, I didn't know you'd bought a new camera - a 5d too!!"

Cue from me lots of justification along the lines of "well it was a steal and I couldn't not buy it",' "I've managed to save loads on the cost of a new one" (of course quoting RRP of £2300!!), "it takes a different sort of photo to my other camera", "I'm figuring out which I prefer then will sell the other one and not loose any money".

In the end I had to come clean and tell her how much it cost. Cue from her "we could have gone on holiday for that", "I want the house redecorating", "I want new windows for the house" type come backs!!

In the end then, I saved about £500 on my new camera, but am now £4,500 and counting into house improvements to keep her quiet!!!

And the moral of the story? Make sure you come clean to your friends and tell them to keep their mouths shut!!!

Enjoy your new kit.

I think I need help. Last week I decided to just buy a 70-200mm f/2.8 mk2 which, although I love, I had to do some explaining to the wife .

Now, I've just gone and purchased a 5d mk2 ! I've wanted one for ages but if my wife finds out she'll kill me! I'm hoping she doesn't notice the difference between the 550d and the 5d!

Got it for £1,000 on eBay during the England game (good time to grab a bargain on eBay) and couldn't help myself.

I'm so excited but worried about my compulsive buying...

Rofl! I just bought the 70-200 too! Man that put a dent in the wallet. I need want need a 10-22, 600 flash and really want to go full frame (like every beginner should) huh! Can you say out of control. Haha..

Bloomin 'eck. I buy lots of stuff. I don't get any grief for it - my partner says what I earn is mine - end of.

Your very lucky Andy, keep hold of her!

Once its arrived, there's nothing she can do about it anyway!
Mine still hasn't noticed we now have a D300 instead of a D200.....:naughty:

...but if my wife finds out she'll kill me!

Sounds like your next upgrade should be the wife, to one that doesn't complain about you spending the money you earn on things you want ;)

I never got the whole "I need to ask the OH if I can buy it" that I see in the classifieds here. I wouldn't dream of telling a partner that she could not buy something, it's her money, she can spend it how she wants

lol, well the way I see it is I've made a commitment to look after my wife and whilst she also earns it's me who is responsible for covering the majority of bills so she can spend more time with our son. If I'm careless with my spending then it can effect her and our son, so it's not really a case of asking her if I can spend money but simply a case of letting her know in case I've forgotten about something. It's about showing her respect, we are in it together!

I'm not saying this is the right way to do things, it's just how I look at it :)

If you feel guilty its perhaps you can't really afford it? Otherwise why would you hide the fact that you have just splashed out on new kit?
Scared the missus will find out?
Worried about compulsive purchasing?
There's so many things wrong with this its unreal, i mean yeah, you spend your money on whatever you want but if that grand is money you either don't have or is savings then that's a debt gained or perhaps a little holiday for you both.
If however you do have money to burn and don't mind spunking it up the walls on kit you don't really need then what's the problem?
I don't know you, i am not judging you for your actions but if what i think is right then i hope you feel guilty with every press of the shutter button

What ever I buy in camera equipment she wants an equal or greater amount spending on her.

I agree with you on this one Graham.

Guys there's some of you that are taking this deadly serious and some that get what I mean.

If/when my wife finds out she'll give me a hard time but she won't divorce me. We join our cash together but I make much more so I'm entitled too and can afford it.

Regardless of whether I can afford it she will always see it as cash I could've saved or that holiday we could've gone on to the Bahamas instead of Greece!

In other words she doesn't get it.

Anyway I think I'm doomed, I thought the 5Dmk2 used SD but discovered its CF. doomed I tell you ;)

OK OK so I have bought more batteries, a charger, a hot shoe cover, some LED lights and a wrist strap.

What did I get her? A f***n divorce!! :D :D

Liking this story :)

Another secret purchaser who gets things delivered to work
Will persuade her the d3200 was a couple of hundred quid and we needed one to take on holiday to Australia in September and all the bits to go with it were free

Good job she never asks how much my polishes and waxes are for the cars ,the price of 2 weeks in the sun and I remember when I got new springs ,geometry and handling kit put on the car she came with me to pick it up and said it handled different
No Darling the mechanic has just blown up the tyres a bit :D
And the new £1000 exhaust system had just been cleaned and lasted the carbon out inside !!

Women as long as they don't know
We have an easy life :D

I sold my D3s to a mate, a member on here. That was in March. As far as I know, his wife still hasn't realised that it's different to his D300.

We all get a bit impulsive at times and buy stuff we realy dont Need, But women are just as bad as men. Lucky for me my wife doesnt question what i buy as long as i dont have the bailifs knocking on the door.

Craking thread i'm realy enjoying this. Lol

I love hearing blokes telling tales of what they have purchased and how they have pulled the wool over the wife's eye, we will look the other way sometimes and buy shoes I bet the wife doesn't always admit to purchases either.

I do buy gadgets too though LOL

Not such a bad idea to turn this around and see how many of us are aware of the wool being pulled over our eyes? I for one am getting suspicious at the number of deliveries we are receiving recently with the wife saying "I'm sending it back as I don't like it" or "It's for the baby".

Are they really being sent back and since when does the baby wear lingerie?

The only person I have to justify buying new kit to is myself and that is just so easy. :)

I have decided not to save my house fund this month as a reward for saving 6 months straight. I'm ahead of target with saving so i'm treating myself to a new lens and to stop the girlfriend moaning i'll buy her a couple of items of clothing lol.

I thought my 18-55mm, 50mm prime and 55-250mm were fine lenses and didn't need any more, however I slipped on the buy button and just invested in a Tokina 11-16mm - more than I've spent on all 3 of those lenses put together!

This photography stuff is a bad habbit that feeds on money :P

I think you need to set up a budget for your gear and stick to it, or only buy from you earn from photography.

thats my way, photography pays for itself, I work at it and all money goes in to the new lens, gadget and whatsit fund. the 2nd 1D the fund owes another fund a bit of money.
